Skywatchers across Scotland are being urged to set their alarms for an early-morning celestial spectacle as a deep partial lunar eclipse takes place on Friday, 28 August.

The eclipse will be visible across the country, although viewing conditions will depend on local weather and the Moon’s position above the horizon. The most dramatic stage will occur shortly before sunrise, when much of the Moon will appear copper-red.

The eclipse begins at about 2.23am BST, with the partial phase starting at 3.33am. It reaches its maximum at approximately 5.12am, when around 93% of the Moon will be within Earth’s darkest shadow, known as the umbra.

In Edinburgh and Glasgow, the maximum occurs at 5.12am, while the eclipse continues until around 6.19am. However, the Moon will be very low in the western-south-western sky, making an unobstructed horizon essential.

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall across the lunar surface. The reddish colour develops because sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere is scattered and refracted towards the Moon.

Unlike a solar eclipse, the event is safe to watch with the naked eye, with no special protective glasses required. Binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens may help reveal the changing colours.

For the best chance of seeing the Blood Moon, observers should choose a dark location with a clear western horizon and check local weather forecasts before heading outside.
