Dry skin or dehydrated skin? Let’s clear up the confusion 🤍

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they aren’t the same thing.

Dry skin is a skin type. Dehydration is a skin condition.

But yes, you can have both at the same time.

Understanding the difference matters because your skin may need something completely different depending on what it’s lacking.

✨ Dry skin needs support with lipids, emollients and barrier-supportive ingredients.

💧 Dehydrated skin needs hydration, humectants and support to retain water.

This is why simply reaching for a rich moisturiser isn’t always the answer.

Before recommending products, we need to understand what the skin is actually lacking.

So why can two products feel and perform completely differently?

This is something I think gets overlooked a lot when we talk about skincare ingredients.

If you see 10% azelaic acid on two products, it’s easy to assume they’re basically the same. But the ingredient itself is only part of the formula.

The form it’s in, the vehicle, the supporting ingredients and the overall formulation can all change how that product behaves on the skin.

So when you’re recommending products to clients, I don’t think it’s enough to just look at the hero ingredient and percentage.

You need to look at the whole formula.

And honestly, this is the kind of product knowledge I want to help skin specialists get better at.

Not just knowing what an ingredient does, but understanding what’s actually going on inside the product and using that to make better recommendations.
