What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is the controlled exposure of living tissues to cold temperatures, usually above freezing point, to induce physiological changes but with no intention to destroy the tissue. To create the severe cold temperatures, a substance like liquid nitrogen or argon gas is used. The heat transfer between the cryogen and tissue causes tissue damage, vascular stasis and inflammatory response. The tissue is destroyed by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice crystals which break the cell membrane, thereby destroying the targeted tissue; allowing healthy tissue to remain untouched. The achieved tissue temperature is the key factor in triggering tissue damage.

The cryopen is a pen-like instrument that delivers a fine pinpoint spray of liquid nitrous oxide at a constant temperature of -127°C on average. The results are permanent however depending on the lesion it may take more than one application to remove.

What can be treated?


👉🏻Skin tags
Skin tags are usually a few millimetres in size and appear as a small flap of tissue that hangs off the skin by a connecting stalk. They are usually found on the neck, armpits, eyelids, groin and breasts.

👉🏻Age/sunspots

Usually, one treatment is sufficient for the removal of pigmented areas such as age and sunspots with the cryopen. Age and sunspots are caused by overactive pigmented cells. On skin that has experienced years of sun exposure, pigmented spots will appear when melanin becomes clumped or is produced in high concentrations. They are more commonly found on the face, hands, chest and forearms.

👉🏻Seborrheic warts
Seborrheic warts are common in the elderly caused by a build-up of ordinary skin cells. They are rough in texture and raised, either yellow or brown in colour.

👉🏻Milia
Milia is more common in new-borns but can occur at any age. They are tiny white or yellow bumps that occur when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin, more commonly found on the face.

👉🏻Cherry angioma
Also known as red moles, cherry angiomas are common skin growths that appear due to a collection of small blood vessels. The cause is unknown, and they are no cause for concern.

During cryotherapy, the Cryopen device is applied to the skin tag, and a fine jet of nitrous oxide gas is sprayed onto the tag. The skin tag will freeze and turn white, and then the device is removed. There may be a slight stinging or burning sensation during the procedure, but it is generally painless.
