What a fantastic day with some of the loveliest Electrologists!

‼ Skin cancer is a major public health concern, overlooked by government intervention!

‼ The reality is that 1 IN EVERY 3 CANCERS DIAGNOSED IN SKIN CANCER and in the UK, 1 in 5 will be diagnosed with a form of the disease.

‼ Rates of melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) is rising faster than any other cancer in Britain AND it’s one of the BIGGEST KILLING CANCERS IN YOUNG ADULTS (AGED 15-34)!

‼ The cost of treatment for skin cancer is estimated to be well over £500 million annually, placing A HUGE FINANCIAL BURDEN ON OUR NHS...

‼ YET 90% OF CASES ARE PREVENTABLE AND SKIN CANCER IS ALMOST ALWAYS CURABLE IF DIAGNOSED EARLY!

‼ It’s NOT rocket science! EDUCATION IS KEY to preventing death and suffering AND relieving the burden on our NHS!

‼ YET, UNLIKE OTHER CANCERS, THE GOVERNMENT SPENDS NOTHING ON TACKLING THIS MAJOR PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN - DESPITE IT BEING ALMOST ENTIRELY PREVENTABLE!

‼ That’s why SKCIN have always referred to skin cancer as the ‘SKINDERELLA’ of cancers and why, as a specialist charity, we are dedicated to the prevention and early detection of the disease through educational intervention.

👉Government needs to :

‼ 1> Ban the commercial use of sunbeds!
‼ 2> Remove VAT from Sunscreens to make them more affordable and classify sunscreen as an essential healthcare item!
‼ 3> Support our long-standing prevention and early detection awareness initiatives and dedicated programmes to help save lives from this devastating disease!

🧡 PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION - SAVES LIVES! 🧡

‼ There are around 1,400 new v***al cancer cases in the UK every year, that’s around 4 every day. It most commonly affects women who have gone through menopause, but it can also occur in younger women.

As with other types of skin cancer, early detection is vital so it’s important that women of ALL SKIN TYPES perform regular self examinations to look for new, unusual or changing lesions that could indicate the early warning signs.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common type - look out for the following signs and symptoms:

‼ Thickening of the skin of the v***a
‼ An open sore (particularly if it lasts for a month or more)
‼ An area on the v***a that looks different from normal (for example it could be lighter or darker than the normal skin around it, or look red or pink)
‼ A lump or bump which could be red, pink, or white and could have a wart-like , raw or rough surface
‼ Itching, pain, burning, bleeding or discharge (not related to the normal menstrual period) are often, but not always symptoms that require further investigation.

Melanoma (Vulvo-vaginal Mucosal Melanoma) is less common and may present with similar signs and symptoms as above. Like other forms of melanoma, they may also present as a new mole or changes to a pre-existing mole and while most appear black or dark brown, in rarer cases they can be white, pink, red, or skin coloured.

In addition to the above signs and symptoms, the ABCDE of melanoma is a useful tool to help detect abnormalities:

‼ A=ASYMMETRY: when one half of the mole looks different to the other
‼ B=BORDER: when the border looks irregular, blurred or undefined
‼ C=COLOUR: when there is more than one visible colour present
‼ D=DIAMETER: when the diameter is greater than 6mm (but could be smaller)
‼ E=EVOLUTION: any changes to size, shape, colour, surface characteristics or sensation

It’s important to seek advice from your GP or dermatologist with signs of anything new, unusual or changing as soon as possible - early detection, diagnosis and treatment saves lives.
