Saturday lessons… because why not? 🎓
Let’s talk apex.
Have you heard the word before? Do you know what it actually means?
The apex is not right at the cuticle — it’s slightly forward from it, usually sitting around the stress area of the nail.
It’s the highest point of the enhancement and is carefully structured to create strength and balance. When applied correctly, it shouldn’t look like a “bump.” It should flow seamlessly from cuticle to tip.
Why is it important?
Because the apex supports the structure of the nail — especially with extensions.
If the apex isn’t built to the correct height for the length of the nail, there’s no proper support. The pressure from daily wear then transfers directly onto the natural nail plate… and that’s when you see lifting, cracking, or breakages.
And no one wants that.
Structure isn’t just about appearance — it’s about durability, safety and professional standards.
Learn this — and much more — in my gel, builder or acrylic courses.

Did you know there’s a very important reason why nail products should never be touching the skin?
And why we move quickly if there’s even the slightest bit of product running?
Well… sit back and relax. Let me educate you 🎓
Nail products are designed for exactly that — the nail plate.
Not the surrounding skin.
When products are applied in thin, controlled layers, you should have little to no issues with flooding.
Overload the brush? It can — and it will — run.
So why does this matter?
Because of allergies.
Repeated skin contact with certain nail product ingredients can lead to allergic reactions such as contact dermatitis. And here’s the key part — reactions can worsen with repeated exposure.
Think redness.
Swelling.
Blistering.
Broken, irritated skin.
Not pretty. Not professional. Not acceptable.
And once a true allergy develops, there’s no quick fix. Services may have to stop entirely until proper allergy testing is carried out to identify the exact trigger.
Now let’s talk about the word everyone loves to panic about… HEMA.
Yes, high concentrations can increase risk — especially with improper use.
But when used correctly, in controlled amounts, and applied professionally without skin contact, it is not the villain social media sometimes makes it out to be.
And “HEMA-free” doesn’t automatically mean allergy-proof. Other acrylates can still trigger reactions. That’s why proper testing and proper education matter. HEMA isn’t always the culprit.
The real issue? Poor application. Poor practice. Repeated skin exposure.
This is why training properly is so important.
Learn correct product control.
Learn safe application.
Learn how to protect both your client and yourself.
We may not be perfect —
but the nails we create, and the standards we work to, absolutely should be.

Morning guys 👋
Here’s another little bit of education, just for yous 😉
Before I was ever allowed to touch a paying client, I had to learn nail anatomy.
Not trends.
Not TikTok techniques.
Actual anatomy.
Because this industry isn’t just about pretty colours and cute designs — it’s about understanding the structure you’re working on and respecting it.
The nail is made up of multiple components:
• The tip at the end of your finger? The free edge.
• The skin directly underneath? The hyponychium — a protective barrier that helps prevent bacteria and infection entering the nail bed.
• That pink area you see? The nail bed. Living tissue. With a blood supply. Not something to over-file or “hope for the best” around.
We are not just working on “dead nails.”
We are working alongside living tissue, and that comes with responsibility.
This is why proper, accredited education matters. Knowledge protects your clients.
Knowledge protects you.
All of this — structure, function, safety and professional standards — is covered in every one of my nail courses.
Pretty is good.
Professional is better.
Happy Friday ✨
Lauren

Hello everyone 👋
Training courses are currently available at LJMs Beauty Academy — and they are fully accredited.
Upon completion, you will be qualified to carry out these services professionally on clients and obtain insurance.
Please note that some nail courses are structured over two days, two weeks apart. This includes a mandatory return session to professionally carry out infill services — a crucial and often overlooked part of these treatments.
Infill knowledge is not optional in this industry. Proper training matters, and thorough education sets professionals apart.
If you’re ready to train to a high standard and build your skills correctly from the beginning, message today to discuss available courses and secure suitable dates.

Hello 👋
Today, instead of a course advertisement, let’s have a little lesson — a small snippet of what you could be learning 😉
Today’s topic is… Contra-indications vs Contra-actions
These are two very different terms within the nail industry (and many other industries too!).
✨ Contra-indication
This is something that exists before a service is carried out.
For example, a pre-existing medical condition, nail disorder, infection, or medication that may affect how a service can be performed — or whether it should be performed at all.
✨ Contra-action
This is something that happens as a direct result of a service.
For example, an allergic reaction such as contact dermatitis, excessive redness, nail plate separation (onycholysis), or irritation following treatment.
Understanding the difference between these two is paramount for any nail tech. It ensures treatments are carried out safely, professionally, and with full client care in mind.
Can you think of any examples of contra-indications or contra-actions? Drop them below 👇
This is just a small insight into one of the many topics covered in all of my courses.
Thanks for reading,
Lauren
