After Amia’s consultation in Part 1, we went ahead with the rooted extension we’d chosen for her — and this is exactly why the consultation is so important.

Amia only has her colour done around every 6 months, so we needed a shade that would work with her natural root and continue to look seamless as her hair grows.

Rooted extensions can look quite dramatic when you first see them, but once they’re fitted and blended correctly, they can create such a natural result.

It’s something we discussed during Erin’s consultation because colour fade is something I always want to consider before choosing the hair.

And rooted extensions aren’t just for blondes either.

They can work beautifully on darker balayages too, where having that deeper root helps everything blend seamlessly into the client’s natural hair.

It’s choosing something that’s going to continue to look right as the colour changes and fades between appointments.

When choosing extension shades, it’s not always about picking the lightest shade that matches the hair.

For Erin, we’ve gone ever so slightly deeper, because we know the extensions will soften with wear and gradually fade.

For Shannon, one row was enough to add the fullness we wanted, while her finer natural hair meant we could also gain a little extra length. We paired that with a rooted shade to keep the finished colour soft, dimensional and lived-in. 🤎

It’s those decisions before and during the fitting that can completely change the finished result.

Your client’s hair colour changes…

Shannon used to wear a much brighter blonde, so her extensions were matched accordingly.

But her natural root has grown through and her overall colour is now much more natural and deeper.

So this time, we’re approaching her colour match completely differently.

We’re only adding one pack of hair, but we’re choosing a multi-tonal shade with a root to work with the depth at Shannon’s natural root and the different tones running through her hair.

Because choosing a single, flat blonde just because “that’s what she had before” could leave you with extensions that no longer truly blend.

And this is where colour matching can go wrong.

Your client’s hair isn’t static.

Roots grow. Colour changes. Tones shift.

50g isn’t always 50g 👀

When choosing extension hair, the weight is only part of the equation.

A higher-end hair can be finer and smoother, meaning you may need more hair to create the same fullness.

Whereas a mid-range hair can be slightly fluffier or coarser, so the same weight can appear fuller.

This is why I give my students a Hair Length & Thickness Guide when training with me, alongside both high-end and mid-range hair options.

But remember — it’s a guide, not a formula.

You still need to learn how to assess the client, the hair you’re using and the result you’re trying to achieve.

In Part 1, I shared why the consultation matters — looking at the natural hair, understanding the client’s goals and deciding exactly what the hair actually needs.

Now you can see what happens when those decisions are put into practice.

We fitted one row, then cut and blended the extensions before styling the hair to create a seamless finish.

And this is the part that I think is so important when it comes to extension training…

It’s easy to focus on the fitting technique, but knowing how to attach extensions is only one part of being a great extensionist.

You need to understand why you’re making certain decisions, how to work with different hair types and densities, and how to create a finish that looks natural — not just immediately after fitting, but as part of the client’s own hair.

That’s the difference between simply knowing how to fit extensions and knowing how to create beautiful results consistently.
