It’s amazing to see THREE Barrhead chippies named as finalists in the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards 2026! 🐟👏

A huge congratulations to Kadir’s, LARCO and Alpino, who are all in the running for recognition at this year’s awards!

These awards celebrate some of the best fish and chip shops across Scotland, so it’s fantastic to see three of our very own Barrhead businesses making the list.

Each has built its own loyal following over the years, with plenty of locals having their favourites!

And with Friday traditionally being chippy night, what better excuse to show our local businesses some support? Whether you’re after a classic fish supper or something else on the menu, there’s plenty of choice right here in Barrhead. 🍟

Arthurlie Cars recently reached the incredible milestone of 1,000,000 rides, which says a lot about just how many people across Barrhead and beyond have relied on them over the years!

Whether it’s the school run, an airport trip, getting to an appointment, heading out for the night or simply needing a safe taxi home, they’ve become a familiar local name for so many people.

Recognise this part of Barrhead?

This photograph takes us back to Main Street more than a century ago, looking along a stretch of the town that will still be very familiar today!

On the right of the photograph you can see the shopfront for Carswell, and this is the very spot where Kaplan Turkish Barbers can now be found!

Old Barrhead records help us put a little more detail behind the photograph too. William Carswell was listed as a flesher, the traditional name for a butcher, trading on Main Street in the late 1800s.

On the opposite side of the road you can also spot R. McMillan, W**e & Spirit Merchant, another of the independent businesses trading in Barrhead at the time.

It’s amazing to see just how different Main Street looked. Horses and carts travelled along the road, the buildings were filled with independent traders and Barrhead itself was growing rapidly as industry brought more people to the area.

More than 100 years later, this same shopfront is still home to a local business!💈

Today, Kaplan Turkish Barbers offers quality men’s and kids’ cuts, fades, beard trims and traditional barbering services, continuing a very long tradition of businesses serving the community from this part of Main Street.

The names above the doors may have changed, but local businesses are still keeping Barrhead’s Main Street busy all these generations later!
