Let’s talk about Expectations Vs Reality
I have many clients who have an unrealistic outlook on sports massage therapy, and what they will gain from it. So, I am here to provide some insight which will help not just you, but also myself with your care plan.
Here are just a few examples of what I hear:
Expectation - “My sports massage is going to be some relaxation time for me”
Reality - Just because it’s called a massage, doesn’t mean it will be relaxing. If you want pure relaxation time, then a Swedish Massage is probably more your thing.
Expectation - “My massage will rid me of pain”
Reality - Sometimes clients will experience some pain after their treatment and this can be for various reasons. It is normal.
Here are some considerations when setting expectations:
◻️ Duration of the pain/issue - chronic conditions are much harder for me to resolve
◻️ Pain intensity - severe pain will be much harder to ease
◻️ Additional medical problems - there are many issues we can feel as therapists in the body, however, will not be able to treat, for example kidney stones, infections, appendix grumbles
◻️ Stress levels - stress can cause havoc on muscle tension, certain types of massage are more conducive to stress, however some can cause further stress on the muscles
◻️ Time - plan ahead and arrive on time if not early to your appointment, that way you won’t arrive feeling stressed out
◻️ Communication - something I want everyone to take note of, please communicate with me if the pressure isn’t right, if the music is annoying, if the temperature in the room isn’t right. I need to know these things to ensure you are in a relaxed state
◻️ Rehab - to help with your muscle recovery, homework is sometimes set for you to continue certain stretches to quicken your recovery at home. I can only do so much, massage alone will likely not cure the problem entirely
And finally…
◻️ Personal care & clothing - I have had so many clients apologise for being sweaty straight from a workout, or haven’t shaved their legs, feeling self-conscious for showing skin. Newsflash! I do not care! I have seen it all before
