TUTOR SPOTLIGHT

Meet Dawn!

Dawn has been passionate about hairdressing for 39 years and has spent over 20 years teaching and developing the next generation of hairdressers. Her career began in a local salon in Grays before moving to London to complete her Level 3 training, where she gained valuable experience working on creative projects, photo shoots and colour award applications.

Dawn later joined Toni & Guy City, progressing to Cutting Director and becoming part of the management team. After returning to Essex, she continued her salon career before moving into education, where she completed her Certificate in Education, Assessor and IQA qualifications.

Dawn is currently the Education Manager and IQAC at JET Hairdressing Academy, supporting both the Essex and London sites. Her role involves quality assuring assessments, supporting teacher development, overseeing learner progress and ensuring apprentices receive the highest standard of training and support. She is also a qualified Safeguarding Lead for learners and staff.

Alongside her management responsibilities, Dawn continues to teach practical and theory sessions, as she believes staying involved with learners is an important part of supporting their development. What she enjoys most is seeing learners grow in confidence, overcome challenges and achieve their career goals.

After nearly four decades in the industry, Dawn still has the same passion for hairdressing that she had as a child. She feels privileged to share her knowledge and experience and to help inspire the next generation of professional stylists.

The Government is introducing new employer incentives of up to £3,000 for eligible businesses hiring young people aged 18 - 24 into employment and apprenticeships, alongside additional apprenticeship support expected from October 2026 for SMEs hiring apprentices aged 16 - 24.

As part of our commitment to supporting our employer partners, we are also launching our new Employer Support & Information Pack on 10th June. The pack will be emailed to all of our employers across Essex and London and will include apprenticeship updates, funding information, employer incentives, key contacts and details of the support available from the JET team.

The pack will be regularly updated throughout the year, ensuring employers always have access to the latest information and guidance. Future updates will be shared alongside editions of The Collective magazine, making it a valuable resource for employers to refer back to whenever needed.

Tutor Spotlight: Harriet

Harriet qualified as a hairdresser at 17, progressed to Level 3, and continued to build her skills by qualifying in hair extensions and becoming a Cancer Hair Care Practitioner.

Throughout her career, Harriet has also had the opportunity to work as an educator for a leading professional colour brand, sharing her knowledge and helping other hairdressers develop their skills — something she has always loved.

Today, Harriet’s working life is a busy mix of:

•Working behind the chair 3–4 days a week
•Teaching Functional Skills at JET 2 days a week
•Managing a busy salon and incredible team of 18+ staff
•Supporting and developing the next generation of Hair Professionals
•And, of course, constantly learning herself!

When Harriet looks back at the 13-year-old girl who first walked into a salon, she could never have imagined where that first step would lead — and how much she would go on to achieve.

You don’t need the perfect words.

Sometimes we avoid asking someone how they really are because we’re worried we’ll say the wrong thing.

But you don’t need to have all the answers.

You don’t need to fix everything.

Sometimes simply noticing, asking, listening and staying with someone can mean more than you realise.

If someone tells you they’re struggling, you can simply say:

“I’m glad you told me.”

“You’re not alone.”

“Let’s get you some support.”

A conversation could be the reason someone feels a little less alone.

SU***DE PREVENTION WEEK

It’s an important opportunity to raise awareness, start conversations and remind people that support is available.

But su***de prevention can’t be something we think about for just one week of the year.

It’s every day.

It’s checking in with someone who seems a little quieter than usual.
It’s asking “Are you really OK?” and giving them the time to answer.
It’s listening without judgement.
It’s knowing where to find support when someone needs more help than we can give.
And it’s creating spaces where people feel safe enough to say, “I’m struggling.”

We want conversations about mental health to be part of everyday life… not just something we talk about during an awareness week.

You never truly know what someone else may be carrying.

Check in, listen, be kind and keep the conversation going… this week and every week.

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on our wonderful Sharon!

Sharon has been hairdressing for an incredible 40 years

She started her hairdressing journey at college on day release and, by the age of 20, had progressed to becoming a manager. After completing her Level 3, Sharon decided to go travelling, which became one of the best decisions she ever made.

Her career has taken her around the world, working in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Dubai and the Canary Islands, giving her some amazing experiences and memories along the way.

Around 20 years ago, Sharon discovered another passion teaching. She instantly loved being able to share her knowledge and experience with others, watching learners develop new skills, grow in confidence and achieve things they may not have thought possible.

Sharon has now been part of the JET Hairdressing Academy family for 17 years, and those years have absolutely flown by!

Although she loves all aspects of hairdressing, colouring has always been her favourite. She loves creating beautiful colours and seeing the transformation they can make.

Today, Sharon is JET’s SEN Leader, a role she is incredibly passionate about. She loves supporting learners, helping them overcome challenges and ensuring they have the support they need to achieve their full potential. ❤️

After 40 years in the industry, Sharon feels incredibly lucky to have built a career doing something she has always loved.

40 years later… she’s still doing hair, still teaching, and still loving every minute of it!

There’s something kinda chic about building a career that’s completely your own.

Learning the skills. Finding your style. Building your confidence. Making mistakes, learning from them and growing into the stylist you’re meant to be.
