Your nail technician should also understand the science behind the products they use — including how gel products cure and why using the correct lamp for those products is so important. The products being used should also comply with current UK cosmetic product regulations, helping to minimise unnecessary risks such as allergic reactions when products are used correctly.

Take a look around the salon:
• Are metal tools properly cleaned and sterilised between clients?
• Are files and other disposable items single-use?
• Are disposable files thrown away after use, or offered to you to take home?
• Does the salon look clean and well maintained?
• Are good practices being followed to prevent cross-contamination?

These little things can make a big difference in helping to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and infection.

So before you book your next nail appointment, have a good look at how your salon actually practises — not just how pretty the finished nails are. 💅🏼
