Let’s talk about lip filler migration 👄
One of the most common concerns I see in clinic is filler migration above the lips — often described as a “shelf,” “shadow,” or loss of that clean, flat lip profile.
So how does this actually happen?
Migration isn’t usually caused by one single thing. It’s typically a combination of:
• Overfilling the lips over time (layering product before previous filler has settled or broken down)
• Incorrect placement of filler outside the natural lip border
• Using too much product in one sitting
• Natural muscle movement constantly pushing filler beyond where it was placed
Over time, the filler can slowly move upward into the area above the lip, creating that blurred, puffy look rather than a defined, crisp shape.

The good news? It can be corrected — and it doesn’t always mean starting from scratch.
A common misconception is that you must fully dissolve everything and wait weeks before refilling.
In reality, with the right technique and assessment:
✨ We can often target and dissolve only the migrated filler
✨ Carefully restore the natural lip border
✨ And in many cases, refill in the same appointment or shortly after (for example, at your 2-week review)

By removing just the misplaced product:
• We keep any filler that is still sitting correctly
• Avoid unnecessary downtime
• Rebuild the lip in a more controlled, balanced way
The goal is always to achieve:

Butterfly Tape Lip Technique 💋
Today’s client journey is a great example of how we safely enhance and refine results over time.
We started with a butterfly tape technique, which allows for a soft, controlled placement of filler to build shape gradually while keeping the lips looking natural.
✨ Step-by-step process:
• Initial lip filler treatment using the butterfly tape method
• Client couldn’t refill lips due to the migration above her lips as she wouldn’t get the shape she wished for.
• We removed previous filler that had migrated above the vermillion border due to poor placement or overfilling, and then refilled to correct and perfect the shape
• Lips were taped for up to 48 hours to support healing and placement
• After tape removal and full assessment at 2 week review, the client chose to go ahead with a full refill for added volume and definition

A little tweak can make such a difference 🤍
This client had jawline filler placed only on the left side to create better balance and definition. By adding just 1ml on that side, we were able to subtly slim and contour the jawline, bringing everything into harmony without overfilling.
Sometimes it’s not about adding everywhere — it’s about treating the areas that need it most. Targeted placement = refined, natural results.
