Let’s talk about lip filler migration 👄
One of the most common concerns I see in clinic is filler migration above the lips — often described as a “shelf,” “shadow,” or loss of that clean, flat lip profile.
So how does this actually happen?
Migration isn’t usually caused by one single thing. It’s typically a combination of:
• Overfilling the lips over time (layering product before previous filler has settled or broken down)
• Incorrect placement of filler outside the natural lip border
• Using too much product in one sitting
• Natural muscle movement constantly pushing filler beyond where it was placed
Over time, the filler can slowly move upward into the area above the lip, creating that blurred, puffy look rather than a defined, crisp shape.

The good news? It can be corrected — and it doesn’t always mean starting from scratch.
A common misconception is that you must fully dissolve everything and wait weeks before refilling.
In reality, with the right technique and assessment:
✨ We can often target and dissolve only the migrated filler
✨ Carefully restore the natural lip border
✨ And in many cases, refill in the same appointment or shortly after (for example, at your 2-week review)

By removing just the misplaced product:
• We keep any filler that is still sitting correctly
• Avoid unnecessary downtime
• Rebuild the lip in a more controlled, balanced way
The goal is always to achieve:
✔ A clean, flat side profile
✔ A defined vermilion border
✔ Natural-looking volume that stays in the lip, not above it
