I had a very bad retinoid reaction last week in the clinic. Thanks to LED Therapy it saved my burning face. In fact it saved my life because I was extremely worried about scaring & pigmentation. I'm on the road to recovery now and 5 DAYS later the marks are gone! My skin barrier is still compromised and very sensitive however LED will accelerate the healing process and will come out of it with better youthful looking skin looking & feeling rejuvenated. The right products & technology...match made in heaven❣

The aim of Chromatherapy aka LED Therapy is to encourage the body to heal itself by reinstating the condition of the cell allowing it to function. This is done by providing the correct energy through the use of specific colours. Each wavelength of light penetrates a specific depth of skin tissue, hence different wavelengths of lights can be used to treat different conditions.

The red light is known to advance tissue repair as it is a longer wavelength, it penetrates deep into the dermis where it targets collagen to promote collagen synthesis, increases vasodilation, cell rejuvenation and an increase in skin cell turnover. Decreases inflammation and improves the function of the immune, lymphatic, nervous and vascular system. This makes the red light excellent for age management. Smoother youthful revatalised complexion.

The blue light relieves inflammation, reduces swelling, antibacterial and aids in eliminating toxins via lymphatic system. The blue light will normalise sebum production as it targets bacteria in sebaceous glands whilst eliminating spots and being gentle on the skin. Evidence has shown that it is the best light for acne treatment. ❤ 💙

Black History Month - 7/10 patients said they had difficulties finding practitioners who were confident in treating their skin type! As a student practitioner they definitely need to improve education because most literature we come across is for Caucasian Skin. There is very little representation of Black skin & this is why most practitioners are not comfortable treating Black patients. Thank God for The Black Aesthetic Advisory Board (BAAB) that is dedicated to improving the experiences of patients & practitioners in the Aesthetic Industry.

Smoking is harmful to your skin. Toxins emitted from the smoke are capable of damaging collagen and elastin, leading to loss of elasticity and strength. This damage speeds up skin ageing, and the appearance of wrinkles. The toxins in cigarette smoke also cause vascular constriction depriving skin of oxygen & nutrients. Quit Smoking!

Friday 17 September 2021 was my graduation. Im grateful to UCB for the course and super proud to be the 2nd group in the UK to attain this achievement. UCB is currently the only University in the UK to offer The Aesthetic Practitioner Degree. I have been on this learning journey since 2017 where I started with a Level 2 Beauty Therapy Course then level 3 and progressed to University where I have now achieved The Aesthetic Practitioner Degree. I literally started from the bottom and didn't take any short cuts. And to think that I'm not done yet doing another year...You shall call me Dr. Ann Makawa by the time I'm finished. I'm so happy & proud of myself. A graduate 🎓class of 2021

Skin Deep series: Understanding Ancestry and Corresponding Skin Challenges

Ancestry is important in creating beautiful outcomes on the skin. Ancestry can shape how the skin will respond to certain topicals and treatments, this must be considered when creating effective, safe treatments and skincare. To understand the skin of any colour one must understand its origins. Though every client will differ based on skin type and condition, there are a few common challenges specific to certain ancestries: -

Caucasian Skin - this skin type should be determined based on skin history and specific skin challenges.

Asian Skin - responds best to progressive peels and corrective facials performed in a series. Microdermabrasion and AHA’s should be used with caution and product selection must be kept to a minimum to determine what is most suitable to the skin.

Latin and Hispanic Skin - Progressive treatments and corrective facials are generally best to start with for this skin type, particularly if there is scarring or hyperpigmentation. This skin type tends to produce more oil which allows for more aggressive treatments with caution.

Black Skin - This skin type generally responds well to a more rapid progression and aggressive topicals that stimulate cell turnover, brighten tone and provide antibacterial support.

CRYOLIPOLYSIS aka "Coolsculpting", "Fat Freezing" - This procedure selectively damages subcutaneous fatty tissue while preserving the skin and surrounding tissues. Fat cells are reduced to temperatures that trigger fat cell apostolic (cell death). The body's immune system is stimulated and will naturally process the apoptotic cells. It is non-surgical and non-invasive. Pain-free fast impressive results! Good for body contouring and shaping. Say NO to surgery!!!
