THAT “RAW HAIR” LABEL? IT’S NOT ALWAYS WHAT IT SEEMS.

Hair processing has come a long way, and because of that, a lot of today’s virgin hair can pass tests that people used to rely on to identify raw hair. Especially with steam-treated extensions, the quality is so refined that basic testing won’t always reveal the difference.

The truth is, most “virgin” hair isn’t completely untouched. It often goes through light processing—like steam to form textures, gentle ammonium solutions for cleaning, and sometimes silicone coatings (like dimethicone) to boost shine and softness. After that, low pH treatments help seal the cuticle back down. Since the cuticle stays mostly intact, this hair can still pass common tests like bleaching, burning, and shedding.

This shift is also why prices have increased and why so many vendors now label nearly everything as “raw,” moving away from terms like 10A, 12A, or 13A. But relying on tests alone won’t tell you the full story. Real quality shows in how the hair holds up over time—through wear, maintenance, and consistency.
