On this Earth Day, I reflect on planetary health, the idea that human health and the health of our environment are deeply connected and influence each other.
As a Chevening Awards (FCDO) Scholar currently pursuing a Masterโs in Public and Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Birmingham, my academic and lived experiences continue to reinforce a critical reality: ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฒ.
Human-caused climate change is increasing health risks in many connected ways, including heat-related illness and deaths, poor air quality, the spread of vector-borne diseases, food insecurity, and water shortages. These effects do not impact everyone equally; they place a greater burden on already vulnerable communities and further widen existing health inequalities.
From my early exposure to environmental and health challenges in Tharparkar (Pakistan) to engaging with global health discourse in the UK, I have come to appreciate the importance of systems thinking, climate-resilient health systems, and evidence-based policy integration.
Addressing these challenges requires a transdisciplinary approach that integrates:
๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐-๐๐๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ (๐๐๐) for sustainable and scalable interventions
๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ-๐๐จ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ frameworks aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
As emerging public health professionals, we must move beyond advocacy towards implementation science, policy translation, and scalable interventions that safeguard both ecological integrity and human well-being.
Because ultimately, advancing planetary health is not optional, it is foundational to achieving sustainable, resilient, and equitable futures.

Honoured and grateful to receive the Birmingham Award from the University of Birmingham as Chevening Scholar.

Wearing this Cancer Research UK t-shirt today while doing my squats felt deeper than just a workout.
โTogether, we are beating cancerโ isnโt a slogan โ itโs a responsibility.
As a Chevening Scholar, currently pursuing my Masterโs in Public and Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham, I see every day how research, prevention, and lifestyle choices intersect in shaping cancer outcomes. Cancer isnโt only a clinical issue; itโs a public health challenge, influenced by environment, diet, physical activity, pollution, and social inequalities.
๐ก Cancer research saves lives โ by improving early detection, advancing treatments, and guiding policies that reduce risk.
๐โโ๏ธ Healthy lifestyles โ regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and avoiding harmful exposures โ are powerful tools in cancer prevention.
๐ Awareness matters โ because informed communities make healthier choices.
Todayโs squats were a small act, but they represent something bigger:
movement for prevention, strength for resilience, and commitment to evidence-based action.
Proud to stand with Cancer Research UK, inspired by the values of Chevening, and motivated to translate global knowledge into impact for communities back home and beyond.
Together โ in labs, policies, classrooms, and gyms โ we are beating cancer.

โจ Lichfield: A Small City with World-Changing Stories โจ
From the stunning Lichfield Cathedral โ Englandโs only three-spired medieval cathedral โ to the quiet charm of Beacon Park, this city carries history far beyond its size ๐ฟ
At Beacon Park stands the statue of Captain Edward John Smith, the Captain of the Titanic, proudly born in Lichfield โ a powerful reminder of how local lives can shape global history ๐๐ข
I also visited the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, home of the man who compiled the first English dictionary ๐๏ธ, paused by the peaceful Minstrel Pool, and stepped into the world of Erasmus Darwin โ physician, philosopher, and grandfather of Charles Darwin ๐งฌ
Lichfield may be small, but its legacy is vast โ faith, intellect, tragedy, and timeless beauty all woven into one unforgettable day โจ

Exploring the beautiful villages of the Cotswolds ๐ฟ๐ก
Bourton-on-the-Water is known for its small stone bridges and a calm river running through the village.
Bibury is famous for Arlington Row, a very old street built hundreds of years ago for wool workers.
Stow-on-the-Wold is a historic market town with old shops, churches, and traditional English pubs.
Lower Slaughter is a quiet village with stone houses, green fields, and a peaceful river.
These villages show what traditional English countryside life looks like โ simple, calm, and timeless โจ

It was wonderful to attend the guest lecture by Dr on Food Chain Security today at .
His insights were powerful, timely, and deeply relevant for anyone working in public health, agriculture, or policy.
Dr. Agbugba highlighted how food chain security is not just about producing enough foodโitโs about ensuring that every step, from farm to fork, remains resilient, safe, and sustainable.
Food security rests on four key pillars:
๐น Availability โ having sufficient food produced or supplied.
๐น Access โ people being able to obtain food physically and economically.
๐น Utilization โ ensuring the food consumed is nutritious, safe, and supports good health.
๐น Stability โ maintaining consistent access to adequate food over time, even in crises.
He also reinforced the determinants that shape a secure food system:
๐พ Climate resilience
๐ Agricultural productivity
๐ฆ Supply chain efficiency
๐ฐ Economic and market stability
๐๏ธ Strong policies and governance
๐ฉโ๐พ Community empowerment and education
Session remind us that protecting the food chain is essential not only for nutrition and health, but also for equity, livelihoods, and national development.
Grateful to our program lead Daniel Drage for the opportunity to learn and reflect.
