The Nurse Who Wasn’t There – Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow

On the northern edge of Glasgow stands Stobhill Hospital, an institution whose history stretches back more than a century. The original hospital opened in 1904 as a vast Poor Law hospital, created to provide medical care for people who could not otherwise afford it. The extensive complex contained numerous red brick ward buildings and provided care for children, older people and patients with medical or psychiatric conditions. During the First World War, Stobhill was requisitioned for military purposes, before eventually becoming part of the newly created National Health Service in 1948.

It was around the middle of the twentieth century that one of Stobhill’s strangest nursing stories is said to have occurred. A student nurse named Mary McLellan was reportedly working a night shift when she noticed a woman dressed in a white nursing uniform entering a small side ward. There was initially nothing particularly frightening about the sight. Mary believed the woman was the night sister and, because she wanted to speak to her, followed her into the room.

When Mary entered the ward, however, the other nurse was nowhere to be seen. Instead, she discovered that the single patient occupying the room was unconscious and urgently required attention. The woman had apparently been expected to leave hospital the following morning, making the sudden deterioration in her condition particularly unexpected. Mary also later recalled hearing a voice coming from the direction of the side ward, which had helped draw her attention towards what was happening.

No satisfactory explanation was ever established for the mysterious woman Mary believed she had followed. According to the story, Mary felt that the strange encounter had effectively guided her towards the patient at precisely the moment help was needed, and she reportedly believed the woman might otherwise have died.

The incident later became one of Britain’s intriguing hospital ghost stories and was included in a 2004 Guardian feature examining supernatural experiences reported by medical staff. What makes the Stobhill story particularly interesting is that its supposed apparition was not described as simply wandering an old corridor or frightening hospital workers. If Mary’s recollection was accurate, the mysterious nurse appeared to have served a purpose leading another nurse directly to a patient in trouble.
