Being employed and being self-employed are two very different things.

When you’re employed, you go to work, get paid, and use that money to cover your household bills.

A self-employed nail tech goes to work too. But if a client cancels at the last minute or simply doesn’t turn up, they’ve still travelled to work, set up their station, and reserved that appointment time—only now they’re not getting paid.

When a client does attend, the money they earn doesn’t go straight into their pocket. First, it has to cover their business costs: salon rent, products, utilities, insurance, training, taxes, and so much more. Only what’s left becomes their wage to pay the bills at home.

Imagine having to cover two sets of bills every single month.

So next time you think about asking, “Can you do it cheaper?”, remember that many nail techs are already charging less than they’re truly worth.

And if you book an appointment, please don’t be a no-show. Some nail techs have even paid for childcare just so they can be there for your appointment.

Supporting your nail tech doesn’t just keep their business going—it helps support their family too. 🫶
