Sometimes we think it’s sensitive skin… but could it actually be a damaged skin barrier?

A damaged skin barrier is often your skin’s way of saying: “Please stop attacking me.”

Three signs I talked about in today’s reel were:

tight skin after cleansing

stinging when applying products

redness or sensitivity more often

But two more signs can also be:

makeup suddenly not sitting properly

skin feeling oily AND dehydrated at the same time

I think a lot of women over 40 assume they suddenly have “bad skin” when actually their skin barrier just needs more support, hydration and gentler products.

This is one of the reasons I’ve become much more careful about:

over-exfoliating

harsh products

stripping cleansers

and doing too much to my skin all at once

Healthy skin is usually calm skin.

If this sounds familiar, comment BARRIER below and I’ll happily help point you in the right direction.

I think a lot of women assume they’ve got dry skin… when actually their skin might be dehydrated.

And there’s a difference.

Dry skin is a skin type. Dehydrated skin is a skin condition caused by a lack of water in the skin.

So if your skin:

feels tight by lunchtime

suddenly looks dull

drinks products up

or your makeup doesn’t sit as nicely as it used to…

there’s a good chance your skin is dehydrated rather than dry.

One of the products I personally love for helping boost hydration is Rainforest Dew because it gives my skin that fresher, plumper look without feeling heavy.

Healthy skin over 40 is much more about hydration and skin comfort than perfection.

If this sounds like your skin, comment DEHYDRATED below and I’ll message you personally to help you work out what might help.

Running late. Very little sleep. One of those mornings where everything feels a bit chaotic.

So today’s glow-up was brought to you by the emergency Tropic bag I keep in my car.

Just three quick products:

Rainforest Dew

Sun Day SPF

Satin Skin Tint. CC Cream

And somehow, ten minutes later, I felt a whole lot more awake, fresher and more like myself again.

I think sometimes skincare and makeup aren’t really about looking perfect… they’re about giving yourself a little reset when the day already feels overwhelming.

Anyway… the nursery awaits.

Hope you all have a lovely day and remember to be kind to yourselves today too.

The older I get, the more I realise beauty is actually about energy.

You can have:

expensive skincare

lovely makeup

perfect hair

…but when you’re exhausted, burnt out and running on empty, it shows.

And I don’t just mean physically.

I think women lose their glow when they’re:

stressed

overwhelmed

constantly giving to everyone else

surviving on no rest

and never slowing down long enough to recharge

These days, the things that make the biggest difference to me are:

sleep

peace

hydration

fresh air

laughter

calmer mornings

taking care of myself properly

and not running myself into the ground

I think healthy skin is connected to wellbeing far more than we realise.

And honestly? Some of the most beautiful women I know simply have a calm, rested energy about them.

That’s the kind of glow-up I’m interested in now.

A little follow-up to this morning’s SPF chat…

This is the SPF I personally use most days on my face, neck and hands: tropicskincare.com

And one of the reasons I like it is because it doesn’t FEEL like old-fashioned sunscreen.

It’s lightweight, dewy, sits beautifully under makeup and doesn’t leave that heavy white cast that so many SPFs used to leave behind.

A few things I found interesting about it:

broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection against both UVA and UVB rays

reef-safe filters

hydrating ingredients including hyaluronic acid

calming ingredients to help support the skin barrier

designed to sit well under makeup rather than pill or separate

And I think that’s important because a lot of women stop wearing SPF simply because they hate the texture or the way it makes makeup sit.

I also didn’t realise until more recently that UVA rays — the ones linked to premature skin ageing — are around all day, even through clouds and windows. UVB rays are the stronger burning rays we usually associate with sunny afternoons.

I still think there’s a balance with sunshine and fresh air, but personally I’d rather protect my skin sensibly than spend years trying to undo damage later.

If you’ve struggled to find an SPF that feels nice on over-40 skin or sits properly under makeup, this is definitely one I’d recommend looking at.
