Mian Dui

One element of this facial ritual is using a crystal Gua Sha.

A crystal Gua Sha is naturally cool - a vasoconstrictor on skin.
It can help ‘muscle memory’ - physically lifting and sculpting
It can help boost collagen production if used quite firmly (micro-trauma)
Strokes are always UPWARDS - never down

It is not lymphatic drainage
It is too heavy to drain - pressure closes the initial lymphatics

Using a Gua Sha is an ancient treatment- the Chinese used any tool - a bottle top, a china spoon etc to scrape over skin (the ‘Gua’) all over the body. The ‘Sha’ refers to the rash (‘sand’) (blood spots from broken capillaries) that you get when used deeply on the body. Of course, as we are working the face we use less pressure than the body.
