Sometimes the right advice isn’t “let’s add more” — it’s let’s remove first.

That can be frustrating when you’re excited to have your brows redone, and it’s understandable to wonder why your artist can’t just go over the old work, or whether removal is really necessary.

But if the existing pigment is too dark, too saturated, uneven, changed colour, or the shape no longer suits you, adding more pigment can compromise the new result before it’s even started.

A good PMU artist is thinking about far more than how your brows look immediately after the appointment. They’re thinking about your skin, how the new pigment will heal, how the colours will interact, how the shape will age, and whether the result will still look good years from now.

And yes, sometimes removal means an extra step and extra cost, but recommending it is often the opposite of trying to take more money from you.
It can be about stopping you from spending money on a treatment that isn’t going to give you the result you’re hoping for.

Sometimes the most professional thing an artist can say is “not yet.”

My lovely client came to me ready for a brow top-up after previously having her brows done elsewhere. She didn’t want to go down the laser removal route, and luckily her previous pigment had faded enough for us to work over.

We refreshed the shape and created these gorgeous combination brows, adding soft hairstrokes with definition throughout.

These are fresh off the needle and will soften and fade during the healing process, leaving a much softer, natural finish once healed 🤍

Not all previous permanent makeup can be covered, so existing pigment always needs to be assessed beforehand to make sure a cover-up is suitable.

Because, it just makes sense.

Over the years I’ve met so many people with old PMU they’ve fallen out of love with, previous work that hasn’t gone to plan, or brows that need removing before we can create the result they actually want.

And having to turn those people away has never sat right with me.

I know what they want to achieve and I can see the potential result, but sometimes adding more pigment just isn’t the answer. Sometimes we need to remove what’s there first.

And that’s what excites me most about bringing laser removal into the clinic.

It gives me another option.
