✝️ This carved tomb effigy of the Veiled Christ is entirely made out of marble, yet it looks transparent. Completed in 1753 by the Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino, the Veiled Christ is carved entirely from a single block of marble. The delicate veil, which appears almost transparent, is in fact solid stone shaped with extraordinary precision. The sculpture depicts the body of Christ after the Crucifixion, covered by a thin shroud that reveals the contours of His face, hands, and body beneath the fabric. The effect is so convincing that legends emerged claiming the marble had been transformed through alchemy. In reality, the illusion was achieved through remarkable craftsmanship and an exceptional understanding of light, texture, and anatomy. Located in the Sansevero Chapel in Naples, the Veiled Christ is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of marble sculpture ever created.
