Are you washing your hair too often – or not enough?

There isn’t one washing routine that’s right for everybody.

How often your hair needs washing can depend on your scalp, hair type, lifestyle, the products you use and how quickly your roots become oily or start to feel weighed down.

Someone with fine hair and an oily scalp may need to wash much more frequently than someone with dry, curly or textured hair.

Danielle’s Professional Tip

I recommend listening to your hair and scalp rather than trying to stick to a certain number of days between washes.

If your scalp feels oily, uncomfortable or has noticeable product build-up, it’s probably time for a wash. If your hair is naturally dry or curly, washing too frequently can sometimes leave the lengths and ends feeling even drier.

When shampooing, concentrate mainly on your scalp and roots. You don’t need to vigorously shampoo the lengths every time – the shampoo will naturally run through them as you rinse.

How often do you wash your hair?

• Every day
• Every 2–3 days
• Once or twice a week
• I go longer between washes

Do you start detangling at the roots or the ends?

If you start brushing from the roots, you can end up pulling knots further down the hair, making them harder to remove and increasing the risk of breakage.

Taking a little extra time to work through tangles gently can help keep your hair healthier and make brushing much more comfortable.

Danielle’s Professional Tip

I always recommend starting at the ends and gradually working your way up towards the roots. Hold each section of hair as you brush so you’re not pulling directly on the scalp, and if your hair is particularly tangled, use a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner to help the brush glide through more easily.

Being patient with your hair today can help prevent unnecessary breakage tomorrow.

Where do you usually start detangling your hair?

• At the roots
• At the ends

Are you protecting your hair before using heat?

Whether you’re blow-drying, straightening or curling your hair, heat styling can leave it feeling dry and more prone to damage if you’re not careful.

Using a heat protectant is a simple step that can help reduce the effects of heat styling and keep your hair looking healthier.

Danielle’s Professional Tip

I always recommend applying a heat protectant before using any heated styling tools. Make sure it’s distributed evenly through your hair and allow it to dry if needed before using straighteners.

You don’t always need to use the highest heat setting either. Using the lowest effective temperature for your hair type can help reduce unnecessary damage while still giving you great results.

Do you use a heat protectant every time you style your hair?

• Always
• Sometimes
• I usually forget

Could your everyday hairstyle be causing breakage?

Many of us wear our hair in the same style every day without thinking about the effect it can have over time.

Tight ponytails, buns and certain protective styles can place repeated tension on the hair. If worn too tightly or too often, this can lead to breakage, particularly around the hairline.

Danielle’s Professional Tip

If your hairstyle feels tight or uncomfortable, it’s probably too tight. I recommend changing the position of your ponytail or bun throughout the week, using softer hair ties where possible and giving your hair a break by wearing it down occasionally. Small changes can help reduce unnecessary stress on your hair.

Which hairstyle do you wear most often?

• Ponytail
• Bun
• Hair down
• Braids or extensions

When did you last clean your hairbrush?

Cleaning your hairbrush is something many people overlook, but it’s an important part of keeping your hair and scalp healthy.

Over time, brushes collect loose hair, natural oils and styling product residue. Using a dirty brush can simply transfer that build-up back through freshly washed hair.

Danielle’s Professional Tip

I recommend removing loose hair from your brush every few uses and giving it a proper clean regularly. If you use dry shampoo or styling products often, your brush will usually need cleaning more frequently.

It’s a simple habit that helps keep your haircare routine fresh.

When did you last clean your hairbrush?

• This week
• This month
• I honestly can’t remember

Does your hair need protection from the sun?

We all know the importance of protecting our skin, but our hair needs looking after too.

Spending long periods in the sun can leave your hair feeling dry, increase frizz and cause colour to fade more quickly.

Here are a few simple ways to protect your hair:

• Wear a hat if you’re out in strong sunshine for long periods.
• Use a leave-in conditioner or UV protection spray.
• Rinse your hair after swimming to remove chlorine or salt water.
• Keep your hair moisturised with the right products for your hair type.

My professional advice is to think about prevention rather than repair. A little extra care before and after sun exposure can make a real difference to the condition of your hair.

Do you protect your hair from the sun?

• Yes, always
• Sometimes
• I’ve never really thought about it

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

an you wash your hair too often?

There isn’t a single answer that suits everyone. How often you should wash your hair depends on your hair type, lifestyle and scalp.

You may need to wash your hair more frequently if you:

* Exercise regularly.
* Have a naturally oily scalp.
* Use styling products every day.

You may be able to wash less often if you:

* Have dry or curly hair.
* Have chemically treated hair.
* Don’t experience excess oil between washes.

The goal isn’t to wash your hair as little as possible—it’s to keep your scalp clean while maintaining healthy-looking hair.

Danielle’s Professional Tip: If your scalp feels itchy, greasy or has visible product build-up, it’s usually a sign that it’s time for a wash rather than sticking to a fixed schedule.

How often do you wash your hair?

* Every day
* Every 2–3 days
* Once a week or less

Should you rinse your hair with hot or cool water?

The answer is both—but at different stages.

Warm water is best when shampooing because it helps remove oil, dirt and product build-up from the hair and scalp.

After conditioning, finish with cool or lukewarm water. This helps smooth the hair cuticle, leaving your hair feeling softer, looking shinier and helping to reduce frizz.

One thing I don’t recommend is washing your hair with very hot water, as it can strip away your hair’s natural oils and leave some hair types feeling dry over time.

Danielle’s professional tip: Use warm water to cleanse your hair, then finish with a cooler rinse after conditioning for smoother, healthier-looking hair.

What temperature do you usually wash your hair with?

* Hot
* Warm
* Cool

Should you brush your hair before washing it?

It’s a simple step that many people skip, but brushing your hair before washing can make a real difference.

Here are a few reasons why I often recommend it:

- It helps remove loose hairs before you shampoo.
- It can reduce tangles during washing.
- It allows your shampoo and conditioner to work through the hair more evenly.
- It can make your hair easier to manage after washing.

If your hair is curly or very textured, be extra gentle and use a brush or comb that’s suitable for your hair type.

| Danielle’s Professional Tip: Never force a brush through knots. Start at the ends and gently work your way up to avoid unnecessary breakage.

Every hair type is different, so your routine should be tailored to your hair, not someone else’s.

Do you brush your hair before washing it?

- Always
- Sometimes
- Never

Do you really need a hair mask?

Hair masks can be a great addition to your haircare routine, but they aren’t something everyone needs after every wash.

A hair mask may be worth using if your hair:

— Feels dry or brittle
— Has been coloured or chemically treated
— Is damaged from heat styling
— Tangles easily
— Lacks softness or shine

If your hair is already healthy and well-moisturised, your regular shampoo and conditioner may be all you need.

The key is choosing products that suit your hair type and condition, rather than simply adding more products to your routine.

| Danielle’s Professional Tip: A hair mask is designed to replace your conditioner on the day you use it—not to be used as well as your conditioner. For most people, using a hair mask once a week is enough to give the hair an extra boost of moisture.

Do you use a hair mask?

- Every week
- Occasionally
- Never
