Heat, Cold or Both? Understanding Thermal Therapy for Muscles & Soft Tissue
When muscles and soft tissues feel tight, stiff, sore or uncomfortable, thermal therapy can be a simple way of helping the area feel more comfortable.
But when should you use heat, when should you use cold, and when might combining the two be useful?
WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
🔥 HOT THERMAL THERAPY
Heat is often useful when the main problem is:
• Muscle stiffness
• Tight or tense muscles
• General muscle aches
• Feeling restricted before movement
• Post-exercise muscle tension
Warmth can feel soothing and may help muscles relax, making movement feel easier.
Think of heat as a way of helping the tissues feel warmer, more relaxed and ready to move.
❄️ COLD THERMAL THERAPY
Cold can be useful when the main issue is:
• Pain or discomfort
• A feeling of irritation after activity
• Acute soreness
• A recently aggravated area where cooling feels relieving
Cold can temporarily reduce pain sensation and can be particularly useful when an area feels hot, irritated or uncomfortable.
Cold isn’t necessarily about “healing” the injury faster — it’s primarily a tool for managing symptoms and making the area feel more comfortable.
THE COMBINATION — GENTLE CONTRAST THERAPY
This is where I like to use a gentler form of contrast therapy.
Rather than leaving a hot or cold compress on the body for an extended period, the temperature is changed in short, controlled cycles:
🔥 1 minute warm compress
⏸️ 1 minute with nothing applied
❄️ 1 minute cold compress
Then repeat for 10–15 minutes.
The changing temperatures give the muscles and delicate soft tissues repeated changes in sensation. Warmth can encourage relaxation, while cooling produces a different physiological response.
You can think of this as creating a kind of gentle internal “massage” effect — not a physical massage, but a repeated change in how the muscles and surrounding tissues respond to temperature.
The neutral minute is important too. It means you’re not simply leaving continuous heat or cold on the same area.
Instead, you’re giving the tissues:
Warm → Rest → Cool → Rest → Warm → Rest → Cool
It’s a simple, controlled approach that some people find particularly soothing for muscle pain, stiffness and general soft-tissue discomfort.
The aim isn’t to use extreme temperatures. It’s about finding a comfortable level and seeing how your body responds.
⚠️ Safety first: temperatures should be comfortable rather than extreme. Protect the skin, don’t apply ice directly to the skin, and stop if you experience burning, significant numbness, unusual skin colour changes or increased pain. Thermal therapy isn’t appropriate for every injury or medical condition, so persistent or significant pain should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
Sometimes you don’t need more intensity — you need better control.
If you are in any doubt and would like me to check the integrity of muscles before you undergo any further intervention. Im only a phone call away.

A little update from Alli Gordon Therapy
Good news… I’m back from my holiday feeling refreshed! 💕
Last week I’ve been busy catching up with my regular clients and getting back on top of new client bookings too. Now my diary is upto date and flowing nicely.
But for this week, I’ll be keeping a slightly lighter diary as I take some time to support my daughter as she gets ready to head off to university. 🎓💕
It’s such an exciting — and emotional — time for us as we get everything organised and ready for this next chapter.
I’m still taking some appointments this week, but most new appointments will be offered from next week onwards.
Thank you, as always, for your understanding and patience. I’m very grateful to be able to make a little extra space for my family during this special time. ❤️
Normal availability will resume soon, and I look forward to seeing you all.

A little break from the Alli Gordon therapy 🌊
I’m currently taking some time away with the family, and for a couple of weeks my clinic looks a little different…
The seaside, coastal walks, fresh air and, of course, a few cream teas along the way! 🫖🌊🥾
It’s lovely to step away from the usual routine, slow down a little and enjoy some proper family time. Sometimes we all need that opportunity to pause, recharge and just be.
I’ll be back taking appointments week commencing 24th August.
If you’d like an appointment when I’m back, please feel free to send me a text. I’ll reply when I can, but please bear with me and allow a little time for me to catch a signal and up and get back into my diary.
For now, I’m going to enjoy the sea air, the walks and making some memories with my family. 💙
See you soon,
Alli x

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away… But Don’t Forget the Water
We’ve all heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While it’s a catchy reminder to make healthy choices, good wellbeing is about more than eating a single piece of fruit. At Alli Gordon Therapy, taking care of your body means looking at the bigger picture—and one of the simplest habits with a big impact is staying hydrated.
An apple is packed with fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants that support overall health, but your muscles and connective tissues also rely on something much more basic: water.
Whether you’ve had a therapeutic massage, sports massage, or simply been active during the day, your body needs adequate hydration to function at its best. Water helps:
* Transport nutrients to muscles and tissues.
* Support healthy circulation.
* Maintain flexibility in muscles and fascia.
* Aid the body’s natural recovery processes.
* Replace fluids lost through exercise and daily activities.
At Alli Gordon Therapy, remember that recovery doesn’t end when your massage does. Bringing a water bottle with you, sipping fluids throughout the day, and staying well hydrated are simple steps that can complement your treatment and help you feel your best. Your body will thank you for it.
Welcome to Alli Gordon Therapy – where treatment comes before pampering.
If you’re expecting a dimly lit beauty room, a spa massage, or an hour of pure relaxation, you may be surprised. My clinic is something different.
The clinic room is a safe, private, and welcoming space where the focus is on helping you move better, feel better, and live with less pain, discomfort, and tension. Every treatment is professional, respectful, and tailored to what your body needs. And while the work can be challenging, there’s always a side order of care, compassion, and even a bit of fun along the way.
My treatments are designed with purpose. They aren’t gentle fluff-and-buff massages intended simply to help you drift off to sleep. They are targeted, intentional, and effective treatments aimed at addressing the root causes of muscular pain, tightness, and dysfunction.
A perfect example is trigger point therapy and targeted pressure release work. To an outsider, it can sometimes look intense—and that’s because it is. Specific pressure is applied to areas of tension within the muscle and soft tissue to help release restrictions, improve movement, reduce pain, and restore function.
Every technique has a reason. Every pressure point has a purpose. Every treatment is focused on helping your body perform at its best.
So yes, there may be moments when you laugh, moments when you discover just how tight that muscle really is, and moments when you feel a release you didn’t realise you needed. But above all, you’ll be treated with respect, understanding, and expert care.
This isn’t about luxury. It’s about results.

There are some things in a treatment room that quietly become a favourite.
A favourite playlist.
The treatment friendly chat
A perfectly supportive pillow.
The warming hands
- Every now and then, a client walks in carrying something so iconic that it earns its own reputation. This towel has officially reached celebrity status.
Bright blue. Covered in cheerful turtles. Instantly recognisable.
The moment the turtle towel appears, the room somehow feels lighter.
Over time, my client and i have a running joke:
“Ah yes… the famous towel has arrived.”& “No Alli you cant take it!!”
Its Fun, familiar, cute and somehow impossible not to smile at. While most towels simply do their job quietly, this one arrives with personality.
So after many appearances, countless laughs, and undeniable emotional support provided to the treatment room…
I am officially awarding this towel:
🏆 Best Towel Award 2026🏆
Presented for:
* Outstanding comfort
* Excellent turtle energy
* Consistent good vibes
* Elite-level recognisability
* Becoming everyone’s favourite without even trying
Of course, the client who brings it is absolutely wonderful too — but this towel has become a bit of a favourite of mine.

At Alli Gordon Therapy, every 1-2-1, session is tailored to you.
Yes, your session can be fun — full of chatting, laughter, and connection. But it can also be a safe, calm space to pause, reflect, and simply breathe.
Either way, it’s your session. You are always in full control. If at any point you need to stop, pause, take a moment, or even sit with a cup of tea, that is absolutely okay.
While I’m treating physical muscles through massage, stress and emotional wellbeing can present themselves in many different ways, throughout the body. I see each treatment as an MOT for your wellbeing — physically and emotionally.
My clinic is your safe space.
No judgement. Just kindness, care, and support.
You’re in safe hands.
There is growing evidence showing the positive connection between massage therapy, pain management, stress reduction, and mental wellbeing.
Let’s talk, let’s be that friend that listens, find that little voice to ask for help, and give time to those who are struggling.
So if you need, I’m offering a safe place.
