“High street businesses are interdependent ecosystems – pubs cannot thrive surrounded by boarded-up salon and retail storefronts.”

That’s the view of Victoria Brownlie, chief policy and sustainability officer at the British Beauty Council, after beauty salons and other personal care businesses were excluded from the Government’s new 20% business rates cut for pubs, social clubs and live music venues in England.

Speaking to Professional Beauty, Brownlie said the personal care sector contributes £28.3 billion to UK GDP and employs 595,000 people, while supporting daytime footfall, local employment and apprenticeship pathways across the country.

“The Treasury needs to stop picking winners and support the whole high street,” she said.

The British Beauty Council is calling for equivalent business rates relief for personal care businesses, reforms to Small Business Rates Relief and a stronger link between online marketplace taxation and support for physical high street premises.

Brownlie added, “If the Prime Minister and his new Cabinet are genuine in their commitment to back ‘the beating heart of our communities’ then we need Treasury to act by extending equivalent business rates relief to personal care businesses who provide a vital anchor to high streets up and down the country.”
