The Face Clinic

Sometimes it really is so much more than aesthetics.
I finished clinic tonight feeling quite emotional.
Not because anything particularly dramatic happened in my clinic but because sometimes people sit in my chair and while we’re talking, they tell me what’s really going on in their lives.
And tonight was one of those nights.
Life can be unbelievably heavy.
People are dealing with grief, illness, worry, stress, family problems and things you would never know just by looking at them.
And yet sometimes, amongst all of that, they just want to do one tiny thing for themselves.
They don’t necessarily want to look younger.
They don’t want to look different.
Sometimes they just want to look in the mirror and think…
“ I look a little fresher.”
“ I feel a little more like me.”
And I think that’s the bit of aesthetics that can sometimes be misunderstood.
I’m obviously not fixing any of the things happening outside my clinic room. A treatment can’t do that.
But I can listen.
I can give someone an hour where it’s about them.
And if I can help them leave feeling just a tiny bit better in their own skin than when they walked in, then that means something to me.
I’ve been a nurse for 20 years, and perhaps that’s why I’ve never really been able to separate the nursing part of me from the aesthetics part.
People aren’t appointments in my diary.
They’re people.
And sometimes you have absolutely no idea what somebody is carrying behind the face you see.
Tonight was just a little reminder to be kind.
