✨Firstly, it is important to be mindful that none of these are proof of anything untoward. But this can give you the opportunity to be ‘professionally curious’ where can you explore your concerns ✨

In our industry we often see clients on a monthly basis, some more regularly and some maybe less so, but this regular contact gives us the ability to get to know our clients. Which means we are more likely to notice if a client appears anxious, withdrawn and not appearing to be their usual self. This could mean less chatty than normal.

•They may say that their partner says that they must have a particular look rather than accept your suggestions.

•In conversation they may say things that seem a little odd to you. They may comment on your freedom and ability to go out with friends or take holidays.

•They may have to answer or respond to calls and messages from their partner quickly. They may seem in a hurry and worry about time or they need a receipt/ proof of their appointment.

•They may cancel appointments at short notice or have become irregular with their appointments.

As you can see, there are several ways we can be more observant, more present in the moment with our clients and many more ways than listed above.

So why don’t people always speak out?
- They may not be ready
- They blame themselves
- They may not be aware that their relationship is abusive or they may not want to believe it.

Let’s break that down a minute.

As professionals within the Health & Beauty Industries, we see many clients in any one day. So for example, we have a booked column of 8 clients in tomorrow. Statistics show that 2 out of those 8 women will experience domestic abuse of some kind. If you work a 5 day week, that’s 10 clients per week. Now think of the positive impact we could have on these clients if we arm ourselves with some level of knowledge and understanding of what they may be experiencing.

𝑴𝒚 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒚 and I am an ‘multi award-winning’ Brow Specialist working from my ‘home based’ salon in Bideford. I have created this account to reach out to like minded people in my industry in the hope that you would like to join me in a special campaign.

In most recent months I have reached out to the Lead Problem Solver for Devon and Cornwall Police to help me create and launch a campaign for domestic abuse safeguarding awareness and training within the beauty industry.

As Health & Beauty businesses, our client base is predominantly female, and I feel that as a mostly female dominated industry we have a responsibility to give those who are in a vulnerable situation a platform and the confidence to be heard.

The health and beauty industry have a very strong ‘sense of community’ and I believe that the fundamental values behind our industry is to empower, not only our clients, but one another.

During the first lockdown, I participated in an online domestic abuse awareness course specifically designed for those in the beauty industry. This was called ‘Behind the mask’. I have wanted to expand on this ever since but did not know which direction to take until now. Working with the Lead Problem Solver (for North & West Devon) we are launching this campaign to get all local salons and sole traders to participate in this training so we can educate and empower those in our industry.

By sharing this knowledge, it will enable you to become more confident when it comes to spotting the signs of abuse, how best to intervene and offer the right resources so the survivor can seek the best support for them.
