Important Update: Allergy Injections (Kenalog) in the UK

Since summer 2025, Kenalog has become unavailable to purchase in the UK in its previous form.

Kenalog is a prescription-only medication and is prescribed off licence for hayfever and seasonal allergies. It is a steroid injection, which means it must only be prescribed by a qualified prescriber and administered by a trained medical professional. Steroids can have significant side effects and are not suitable for everyone. A full medical assessment is essential to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.

The allergy injection currently available contains triamcinolone acetonide, and while it may still be referred to under the Kenalog brand name, it is not identical to the previous formulation. Some patients may notice that it feels different or does not provide exactly the same level of relief as injections received prior to summer 2025. However, it remains an effective treatment for seasonal allergies when prescribed appropriately.

Most patients require only one injection per season. In certain cases, a second injection may be prescribed — but only after proper clinical assessment and where medically appropriate.

It is extremely important to carefully consider who you receive this treatment from. Steroid injections should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional with appropriate prescribing knowledge. This ensures:

You are medically suitable for treatment

Risks and side effects are properly discussed

Safe dosage and follow-up care are provided

I am a Nurse Practitioner and Independent Nurse Prescriber with many years of experience in prescribing and administering injectable treatments. Alternatively, seeing a qualified nurse injector who works closely with a regular prescriber and provides a full consultation is also appropriate. What is not appropriate is receiving steroid treatment from someone without the clinical knowledge to fully understand its effects and risks.
