Lets talk lip anatomy.

Many patients visit us looking to have their pink lip augmented (plumped) but, to us the lip is so much more than that. Lots of people don't realise that the lip extends from the base of the nose to the mental crease and include things line the philtral columns or philtrum ridges which we often place a small amount of filler under in order to redefine them but also to help lift the cupids bow as this can flatten with age.

Another important structure is the oral commissures. These hold up the corners of the mouth. As we age these loose their strength and structure and the corners of the mouth start to turn down and can lead to whats often referred to as a 'sad' smile. A small amount of filler placed under the corners of the mouth here can lift the lips and reduce the sad look.

1ml of Lip filler doesn't have to give you the dreaded 'trout' pout.

What many people don't realise, it isn't always down to the volume of filler being injected that causes the problem but, the brand of filler selected, the injection technique adopted and what your chosen injector see's and be beautiful.

Each filler, of which there are 1000's on the market, some are definitely better quality than others, all have their own unique properties.

The vast majority of fillers used in aesthetics are hyaluronic acid based. Within each companies 'brand' of filler there's usually 4 to 6 fillers. Each ranging on a continuum from thin water types which are like honey and often used in the superficial skin layers to hydrate the treated area, to those that are much thicker and used to replace lost volume in the deeper structures of the face which we loose as we age like in the cheeks or jawlines.

Understanding the unique properties of each filler allows us to select the correct one for you that will give you a natural looking enhancement and a lip that will move as if it were your very own.

Vertical lip lines, barcode lines, smoker lines or as a patient recently called them her 'kissing lines'. Whatever you call the lines that appear most noticeably above the upper lip but, can also extend from the bottom lip as well they can make you look older that you are.

So, why do they develop?
Predominantly they occur as part of the natural ageing process. As the white part of the lip elongates naturally with age and the bony structures behind the lips start to recess the lips appear to concertina. Add to this skin laxity which also occurs as part of the ageing process, sun damage and/or smoking and you could be experiencing some challenges here.

What can be done about it?
We have a number of treatment options depending on your personal choice and desired outcome.
Microneedling is great for a natural boost of collagen. It also stimulates elastin production which helps with skin laxity and improves the overall tone and texture of skin.
Small amounts of muscle relaxant can be used to slow the muscle activity associated with pursuing of the lips which can help soften the finer lines or early stages.
Dermal fillers. This is the most effective and certainly works best for the more significant lines that have developed over years. Although we used the word 'filler' here there's no need to be scared that your lips are going to look bigger or 'duck' like we often don't have to go into the pink part of the lip so, gives a very lovely, natural result.
