Six months ago, I asked for your help creating a Cold Water Handbook.

Today, I'm finally sharing the cover 😁

What I thought would be a fairly small project gradually grew into something much bigger than I ever intended.

Along the way, 846 cold water swimmers shared their experiences, lessons, advice, tips and reflections. Some told me the things they wished they'd known when they started. Others shared the habits, routines and small lessons they'd picked up over years of swimming outdoors.

And some answered a question that I couldn't stop thinking about:

How does cold water make you feel?

When I read through all the responses, one word appeared more than any other.

Alive.

Not refreshed.

Not invigorated.

Not energised.

Alive.

Those responses, together with months of research, writing, editing and fact-checking, gradually became this:

I wanted to create something that combined the latest understanding of cold water with the practical wisdom of people who actually spend time in it.

Something useful.

Something honest.

Something that would help people make good decisions around the water, whether they're taking their first dip or have been swimming outdoors for years.

And before anything else, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who filled in a survey, shared a tip, contributed a story, tested an early draft, or encouraged me to keep going when the project became much larger than I expected.

This handbook genuinely wouldn't be what it is without you.

With Drowning Prevention Week taking place this week, it also feels like a timely reminder that understanding cold water and staying safe around it matters at every time of year.
