Last winter I stopped hiding from the cold and got in it instead. 🧊🧊

I’d spent years treating November to March as something to be endured. Dark by four, grey by default, and a general low hum of waiting for spring.

Then I started cold water swimming, and the whole season flipped.

The post-dip rush is genuinely something else. Fifteen minutes after you get out you’re warm, wide awake and a bit giddy, and it lasts for hours. Do it with friends and it stops being a wellness thing and starts being the best part of your week — standing on a riverbank, laughing, half-frozen, absolutely buzzing.

Last year I’d come home to a hot bath. This year it’s a wood-fired sauna in Farndon, twenty minutes from Chester and just over the border from Wrexham. Dip in the river, drive over, get in the heat. That’s the plan for the whole of autumn and winter.

Last year I walked away from my corporate tech job to build Cheshire’s first authentic wood-fired Nordic sauna and cold plunge. No shortcuts, no cheap barrel on a trailer — a proper, high-spec Finnish sauna, built by hand, with a real stove at the heart of it.

A year of building taught us exactly what it takes to do this right. And it turns out you don’t need to charge a fortune to build something properly.
