Did you know that the term Photobiomodulation was actually coined by the pioneering scientist, Dr Tiina Karu?

The word itself perfectly describes the therapy:
Photo = Light
Bio = Biology
Modulation = To regulate or influence

Beginning her research in the 1970s, Dr Karu set out to understand exactly how light interacts with living cells. Interestingly, her original aim was not to prove the benefits of light therapy, but to challenge and disprove earlier findings that suggested red light could promote healing.

Those findings dated back to 1967, when Hungarian physician Dr Endre Mester accidentally discovered that low-level laser light appeared to stimulate hair growth and wound healing in laboratory animals while attempting to investigate whether lasers could cause cancer. His unexpected observations would go on to spark decades of scientific exploration.

Rather than dismissing these claims, Dr Karu dedicated her career to uncovering the biological mechanisms behind them. Her ground-breaking work revealed that specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are absorbed by the mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, helping to influence cellular energy production and a variety of natural repair processes.

Today, many of the principles that underpin modern Photobiomodulation therapies can be traced back to Dr Karu's pioneering research. Her contributions not only helped validate this growing field of science but also gave it the name by which it is now recognised around the world.

Today Jolene will be at the Lymphodoema Support Network Roadshow, where she will be talking to delegates about the powerful science of Photobiomodulation in helping support lymphatic drainage, reducing inflammation, softening fibrotic tissue and helping improve the symptoms of Lymphodema.

She's so excited to speak to visitors about the exciting studies backing Photobiomodulation and the ever growing scientific field that is PBM.
