⚠️ A PS5 Service Reminder From The Workshop ⚠️

This PS5 came into PlayBox Console Services with a display fault and was also due a full internal service.

What we find inside most consoles is eye-opening:

📸 Heavy dust accumulation throughout the cooling system
📸 Heatsink fins partially blocked with compacted dust
📸 Fan blades coated in debris
📸 Liquid metal no longer evenly distributed across the APU

Liquid metal is responsible for transferring heat from the PS5's processor to the cooling system. Ideally, it should maintain full and even coverage across the entire contact surface.

In this particular console, the liquid metal had noticeably migrated and pooled towards one side, leaving areas with reduced coverage. Combined with the restricted airflow caused by the dust build-up, this can result in higher operating temperatures, reduced cooling efficiency and, over time, increased thermal stress on critical components.

Following a complete strip-down, deep clean, liquid metal service, thermal pad inspection and HDMI repair, this PS5 is now fully operational and performing as intended.

📋 A Note On Vertical PS5 Placement 📋

Many repair technicians, including ourselves, have observed that some older PS5 models which spend long periods standing vertically can show signs of liquid metal migration when opened for service.

While not every vertically positioned PS5 will experience this, and Sony officially supports both horizontal and vertical use, it is one of the reasons we personally recommend operating the console horizontally whenever possible.

A horizontal position may help maintain more even liquid metal coverage over the long term and is the setup we recommend for customers looking to maximise the lifespan of their console.

• Long-term thermal stress on components

🔥 HOT WEATHER + NEW GAME RELEASES = OVERHEATING SEASON 🔥

We’ve had around 9 Xbox Series S/X consoles in recently with overheating and cooling related issues over the past few days alone.

With the current temperatures and demanding newer games pushing these systems harder than ever, consoles that have never been internally cleaned are really starting to struggle.

This Xbox Series S from today is a perfect example of the UNKNOWN condition inside most peoples consoles.
Externally? Looks pretty clean.
Internally? The heatsink was almost completely blocked with compacted dust and lint, restricting airflow so badly the console was essentially trying to breathe through carpet.

⚠️ Symptoms customers often notice:
• Loud fan noise
• Excessive heat
• Random shutdowns
• Lag/stutter during gameplay
• Performance drops
• Hot air barely coming out the exhaust
• Burning dust smell

In this case:

The difference in airflow and cooling performance afterwards was massive.

🛠️ Another week inside the PlayBox workshop… and this is exactly why proper diagnostics and preventative maintenance matter.

From advanced board-level microsoldering and BGA work, to heavily dust-clogged cooling systems and failing thermal compounds — every console tells a story once it’s opened up.

This batch included:

This PS5 came into the workshop from Ward 29 at Ninewells Hospital with a no display fault that wasn’t related to the HDMI port itself. After diagnostics and repair work, it’s now fully tested and back up and running again 🎮

Whenever we can, we try to help out local NHS wards and frontline staff where possible. Saving NHS Scotland money where we can is the least we can do really — myself and my family have benefited massively from the service over the years, so it’s just a small way of showing support and appreciation in return.
