“What got you into podiatry?”
- a question I get asked almost every day…

Honest answer? Total fluke — I didn't even know what a podiatrist was.

I used to be a support worker and home care assistant, but I never felt like my voice was loud enough to properly advocate for my clients. So I went back to college, did my diploma in adult healthcare, and someone in class mentioned a degree that would lead to work that was "Monday to Friday, 9-5." I jumped at it.

Turns out running my own business is anything but 9-5 — but it's given me time with my family, my dog Max, my nephews, and let me finally be the voice for my clients I always wanted to be.

I've had my fair share of life, which I've shared with some of you along the way. I'm a real person, with real experiences — and I think that's part of why people trust me with their care. - I also know a fair bit about feet!

Dementia: an absolutely cruel disease that replaces the person you love - with a person you don’t particularly want to be near. This is not just a clinician speaking. It’s someone that’s been there, that faces the same dilemma day in day out. And just like you, I feel hopeless, helpless, and a bad person for feeling like I do. You’re not alone. At this point I could do my sales pitch and refer to their feet. I won’t. It’s the very last thing you worry about when trying to ensure they have dignity, making sure they’re fed, debating if the newest version of events are true.
Did you know you can apply to the local council adult services for a free needs assessment - regardless of income. This will give you some idea of next steps, so this Groundhog Day feels a little less… heavy.
You can also request your local fire service fits smoke alarms. My nan won’t hear them, but the neighbors might. It might not save her life - but it might save next doors.
The Alzheimer’s society also has a list of helpful tools you can make use of, not just for caring for your loved one - but also for you. We feel unheard - but we aren’t speaking up.
