Social isolation and older people 💙

Many older people live alone, and loneliness can become a serious issue as social connections change through bereavement, retirement, loss of confidence, reduced access to transport, reduced income, poor health and reduced mobility.
Social isolation can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing, and has been linked with increased risks of depression, anxiety, dementia and other health problems.
There is also evidence linking social isolation with increased risks of heart disease, obesity and reduced immunity.

As Steve Cole puts it:
“Loneliness acts as a fertiliser for other diseases.”

A recent meta-analysis by Zhenrong et al. (2024) suggested that social isolation affects around 33% of older people.
This highlights how important it is to look beyond physical health and consider the social wellbeing of older people too. Sometimes a friendly conversation, regular visit or simply feeling connected can make a real difference. ❤️

I am currently fully booked until late October. I usually manage to squeeze people in here and there but my diary is ready to explode and I have completely run out of space. I do of course get some cancellations so feel free to get in contact if you need assistance and I will help if I can.

Are Crocs Good for Your Feet? What You Need to Know

Crocs have become incredibly popular over the years, and it’s easy to see why. They’re lightweight, comfortable, easy to slip on and off, and ideal for everything from popping to the shops to relaxing around the house.

But are Crocs actually good for your feet?

The answer is sometimes. Like most footwear, it depends on how you use them, how well they fit and how much support your feet need.

Why do people love Crocs?

One of the biggest attractions of Crocs is their comfort. The soft, lightweight material provides plenty of cushioning and they offer lots of room around the toes.

They’re also breathable, water-resistant and easy to clean, making them particularly useful around the house, garden, swimming pool or on holiday.

For someone who has spent all day in restrictive footwear, slipping into a comfortable pair of Crocs can certainly feel like a relief.

The problem with wearing Crocs all day

Although they are comfortable, comfort doesn't always mean that footwear is providing everything your feet need.

The classic Crocs clog doesn't provide the same level of stability and structured support as a good-quality supportive walking or sports shoe.

This can become more important if you're walking long distances, exercising, running or spending many hours on your feet.

The heel strap can provide some additional security when worn correctly, but it still doesn't offer the same level of ankle support you would normally expect from a properly fitted walking or training shoe.

What about arch support?

Crocs have a cushioned footbed, which many people find very comfortable.

However, cushioning and support aren't necessarily the same thing.

If you have particular foot problems, changes in your walking pattern or require additional support, simply having a soft and comfortable sole may not be enough.

This is where choosing the right footwear for your individual feet becomes important.

Fit matters

One of the biggest causes of problems with footwear is wearing shoes that don't fit correctly.

Your footwear should give your toes enough room to move without allowing your foot to slide around excessively.

Crocs are generally roomy, which can be beneficial for people who dislike restrictive footwear. However, a shoe that is too loose can also allow the foot to move around unnecessarily.

If you're wearing Crocs, make sure they're a comfortable fit and use the heel strap when you need additional security.

When are Crocs a good choice?

Crocs can be a useful choice for shorter periods of everyday wear, particularly around the home, garden, pool or beach.

They can also be a comfortable option when you simply want to give your feet a break from more restrictive footwear.

However, I'd be more cautious about using traditional Crocs as your main footwear for:

- Long-distance walking
- Running
- Gym workouts
- Weight training
- Activities requiring good ankle stability
- Spending very long periods on your feet

For these activities, a properly fitted shoe designed specifically for the activity is usually a better option.

The bottom line

Are Crocs bad for your feet? Not necessarily.

Are they the perfect shoe for every situation? Definitely not.

Crocs can be comfortable and practical footwear, but it's important to remember that different activities require different levels of support and stability.

If you're experiencing regular foot pain, corns, calluses, pressure areas, changes to your toenails or discomfort when walking, don't simply assume that changing your footwear will solve the problem.

Sometimes your feet are telling you that they need a little more attention.
