Welcome, Lauren! Joining us from Kildaire, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช, Lauren is working Tues-Sat starting tomorrow. A qualified stylist who comes to us with extra training in curly hair and hair extensions (side note - should we offer extensions??)

From Lauren:

"Hey Iโ€™m Lauren! Iโ€™m a bubbly, creative hairstylist who loves a good chat, a good laugh and helping my clients feel like the best version of themselves. I especially love working with curls and creating curly cuts that bring out their natural shape and personality. Iโ€™m always up for a chat, but if youโ€™d rather sit back, relax and enjoy some quiet time, Iโ€™m just as happy with that too! I canโ€™t wait to meet you all ๐Ÿค"

My recent thoughts, edited for length ๐Ÿ˜†

With more and more stylists telling us they're feeling overwhelmed/burnt out/overstimulated in salon environments and so many people saying they avoid the salon or barbers because they hate having to chat - we need to have a conversation.

It's long been a stereotype that hairdressers are chatty, extroverted and were always told off at school for talking too much (for reference, I was a quiet, weird loner ๐Ÿ˜‚). For sure, there are many like this and that's great. But the expectation that a stylist SHOULD be chatty is one I'm here to question (and this goes for nail/lash techs/beauty professionals etc).

Hairdressing is one of few jobs where you are expected to do your job and carry out an entire conversation that isn't in any way related to what you're doing. In hair college, we're taught to learn to do this very thing right off the bat. For many people, this need to try and split focus is very challenging. Not withstanding the potential for mistakes or longer service times, for many neuro-divergant or noise-sensitive stylists, keeping up conversations all day can lead to overstimulation, fatigue and burnout.

So, in the same way we're challenging the long-held view of hairdressers being therapists (we're not), let's also challenge this expectation and be mindful of each other's needs.

I love a good chat sometimes, and I love to have quiet appointments too. In our salon, we have chatty stylists, and quieter ones. Pick your stylist based on how they fit your vibe ๐Ÿ’œ

What's your preference? How do you feel about the 'chatty hairdresser' trope?

Rant incoming ๐Ÿ˜†

Seriously though, the amount of people crying on the internet about their cut/colour/perm whatever is getting out of hand. 'Influencer' culture is out of hand. Stop shaming stylists online, stop trying to ruin people's businesses for likes and follows.

What's your thoughts on this?

Best in Class for another year running! We don't enter awards, mostly because you have to pay to enter them and that just feels wrong, but since opening nearly 4 years ago, we've been awarded Fresha's best in class or highly recommended every year.

This is down to the amount of great reviews and bookings we get, and that is hands down due to our amazing stylists Sabrina Thomas Joanna Czarnecka Hairdresser and . They and our incredible clients are what makes House of Lilith the success it is, and I'm very grateful to have them.

So, thanks very much for all your support, and let it be known that reviews do make a big difference to small businesses!

Here's to next year.

Vintage hair, my first love.

Head over to Ariana Marcantonio Hair Historian to see more from the archives.

I've styled weddings, photoshoots, film and theatre actors, comedians, editorial, fashion, film events, Fringe shows, festivals; done talks on the history of hair fashions at the Women's Institute and the National Galleries Scotland; worked with Wayne Hemmingway, the Barbican and Agent Provocateur, and won awards for my vintage work

The cultural history of hair and hair fashions throughout the decades - centuries! - is a huge passion of mine.

And I still love styling a victory roll just as much as that day when it finally clicked how to do one properly, 17 years ago. ๐Ÿ’œ

Models required for am exciting upcoming project!

We're looking for people of all genders & all skin tones for an upcoming project, where your photograph will appear in a published book and be included in educational material. The photos that will be used will resemble these ones, in that you will have no makeup, and hair will be off the face (though you're allowed to wear a top, unlike this example ๐Ÿ˜†). The photos will be used for colour and facial analysis purposes, hence why all skin tones are needed! If included, your colour and facial analysis will be done.

Please note, you won't be getting your hair done! These are purely for a book and an educational course that are in the works.

Please submit photos via DMs, as similar to these examples as possible. No makeup, in good NATURAL light, and hair off the face. We won't be able to take everybody, so please be patient for responses. Once a good variety of tones and faces are selected, we'll be in touch to arrange proper photograph sessions.

Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜Š
