Never underestimate the power of a good hair day; the feeling you get when you leave the salon knowing your hair looks fabulous. Jemma Mcarthur, owner of the new Strathearn Road hair salon Vintage Hair Company recently re-introduced me to such a feeling. Mcarthur used to freelance from a salon over in Gilmore Place but felt the time had come to set up her own space. The Strathearn Road shop came up for rent and she felt it was right, “I could see myself in here, when there was a lot of places I couldn’t.” Marchmont’s sense of community played an important part in her decision making. The salon is funky, with large ornate mirrors and an impressive chandelier contrasting with the sleek black tiles in the hair-washing area but what is most striking is the warmth and natural light flooding in from the south-facing window. In this conveniently located, inviting space Mcarthur offers a wide range of cuts and Goldwell colours, with discounts for students and seniors and late night opening each Thursday. Being a new business, Mcarthur is keen to follow a client-led approach to expansion and will find out what her customers would like to have along with their hair treatments, such as manicures and pedicures. She is also on the lookout for a dedicated junior to help in the salon and learn the first steps of a very rewarding career. After all, what could be better than making people feel good about their appearance?
