Why is it better for a colorist to work on clean hair?

For many years there has been a belief that it is better to come to the salon with very unwashed hair, as natural sebum was thought to protect the scalp during coloring. And indeed — decades ago, hair color products were much stronger and their formulas far less advanced.

Today, professional coloring works differently. Modern products are designed to perform effectively without the need for several days of unwashed hair or “natural buildup” on the scalp.

Why do clean hair matter?

✨ Accurate color assessment – this is one of the most important stages of coloring. When hair is heavily coated with products such as gel, hairspray, or styling residue, it becomes much harder to determine the true base and level of the hair. And this diagnosis is essential for choosing the right shade and technique.

✨ More predictable results – especially in lightening services, it is crucial to clearly identify the starting level to achieve a controlled and even lifting process and a consistent final result.

✨ Proper service ex*****on – in some cases, heavily product-loaded hair requires washing and drying before the actual coloring can begin. This can extend the appointment time by 20–30 minutes and affect the schedule of other clients.
