This week is Maternal Mental Health Week, with this year’s theme ‘Together In A Changing World', which is about connecting communities. We are lucky to have an amazing supportive community here in Topsham for mums bringing women together in safe and supportive groups where experiences can be shared.

A reminder of the new “Take 5” baby and infant support group for parents/carers at St Margaret’s Church every Monday 10-11am (apart from bank holidays) where I will be running some more drop in baby massage sessions during May 👶🏻 to give you a greater understanding of why nurturing touch is so important for you and your baby.

Today marks the end of Stress Awareness Month. Managing stress is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Knowing how to manage stress can improve mental and physical health and wellbeing. Incorporating self-care is an essential component in managing stress. Here are my easy tips for self-care, each I try to incorporate into my practice (apart from quality sleep at the moment thank you Arla 👶🏻) How many do you do?

Adequate sleep is necessary for healthy functioning, and quality sleeping patterns are vital to health and wellness. Those who sleep less than 8 hours per night are experiencing “sleep debt,” which cannot be reversed by sleeping more on the weekend. Lack of sleep can often lead to low work performance, and slowed reaction time. Chronic insomnia causes extreme fatigue and extreme problems with concentration, which can adversely affect a person’s mood and wellbeing as well as a higher risk of obesity and a higher risk of long-term disease.

Research has shown that massage can directly influence the body's production of serotonin and the creation of melatonin which is relevant for the chemistry of sleep. Massage also helps people spend more time in deep sleep, the restorative stage in which the body barely moves, which reduces the neurotransmitter associated with pain.
