🌿 Why Choosing a Well‑Educated Post‑Surgery MLD and Scar Therapy Provider Matters

Recovering from surgery is a huge physical and emotional process. Your body is repairing tissue, managing inflammation, reorganising lymphatic pathways, and beginning the early stages of scar formation — all at the same time.
This is why it’s so important to choose a therapist who is properly trained in both post‑surgical Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and specialist Scar Therapy.

Not all training is equal. And when you’ve just had surgery, the difference matters.

šŸ’” Why my two specialist qualifications matter for someone like Amy.

When someone like Amy comes to me after surgery, she isn’t just dealing with swelling. She’s dealing with:

- disrupted lymphatic pathways
- inflammation and fluid retention
- early scar tissue formation
- changes in sensation
- protective muscle guarding
- emotional overwhelm and uncertainty

Supporting all of that safely requires two distinct but complementary skill sets:

Advanced Post‑Surgery MLD Training
This is not a quick, introductory course.
My advanced training involved four intensive days of hands‑on, clinically focused work, learning how to:

- understand surgical techniques and how they affect swelling
- map new lymphatic pathways after tissue trauma
- identify red flags such as seromas, infection, or abnormal swelling
- work safely around drains, sutures, bruising, fibrosis, and sensitive areas
- support immune‑sensitive clients with gentle, precise techniques
- adapt treatment to each stage of healing

This level of training is essential because post‑surgery MLD is not ā€œjust a massageā€.
It’s a clinical intervention that requires anatomical knowledge, surgical awareness, and extremely gentle, specific techniques.

Restore Scar Therapy Training
Scar tissue begins forming immediately after surgery — long before the scar looks ā€œhealedā€ on the surface.
My Scar Therapy training allows me to:

- work with early scar tissue safely and gently
- reduce tightness, pulling, and restricted movement
- support nerve recovery and sensation changes
- improve circulation and hydration in healing tissue
- help prevent long‑term issues like adhesions and tethering
- support emotional comfort around touching a new or traumatic scar

For someone like Amy, this means her scar is supported from the very beginning — not months later when problems have already developed.

🌱 Why the combination matters
When MLD and Scar Therapy are combined by someone trained in both, clients receive:

- safer, more effective swelling reduction
- better long‑term scar outcomes
- less discomfort and tightness
- improved mobility and body confidence
- support that adapts to each stage of healing
- a therapist who understands the whole picture, not just one part of it

This is especially important for clients who are immune‑sensitive, neurodivergent, or recovering from cancer treatment, where gentleness, consent, and clinical awareness are essential.

šŸ’› Your healing deserves expertise
Post‑surgery care is not the place for guesswork or generic techniques.
Your body is doing something extraordinary — and it deserves someone who has invested in proper, in‑depth education to support it safely.

🄳I’ve just completed an intensive Post‑Surgery Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) certification with the Lymphoedema Training Academy — one of the most respected training providers in the UK for lymphatic and post‑operative care.

This qualification covers pre and post‑operative support, lymphatic assessment, safe techniques for cosmetic, orthopaedic, and cancer‑related surgeries, and the clinical reasoning needed to work with complex healing processes. It’s a level of training that goes far beyond a short introductory course.

Why this matters for you
Post‑surgery care isn’t just ā€œa massage with lighter pressure.ā€
It requires:
Precise, feather‑light techniques that support lymphatic function without disrupting healing
Understanding of surgical procedures, drains, scar formation, fibrosis, swelling patterns, and red flags
Knowledge of immune‑sensitive and oncology‑aware practice
Clinical judgement to adapt safely to each stage of recovery
Trauma‑informed communication so you feel safe, respected, and in control

When you’re recovering from surgery, your body is doing an enormous amount of work. The person supporting you needs to understand that — not guessing.

Why choosing a therapist with advanced training matters, because anyone can say they ā€œdo MLD.ā€ But post‑surgical MLD is a specialist skill, and it should only be carried out by someone who has invested in:
Evidence‑based, hands‑on training
Assessment skills, not just technique
Understanding of complications, contraindications, and when to refer
Up‑to‑date lymphatic science
Safe, gentle, client‑centred practice

Your recovery deserves someone who has taken the time to learn properly, not someone relying on a generic massage qualification or a one‑day taster.
What this means for clients at NM Massage Therapy
You’re receiving care from someone who:
Has completed intensive, specialist training in post‑surgical lymphatic work
Works in a trauma‑informed, immune‑sensitive, clinically grounded way
Understands the emotional and physical realities of recovery
Prioritises safety, comfort, and evidence‑based practice
Continues to invest in professional development because your wellbeing matters

This certification isn’t just a piece of paper — it’s a commitment to offering the highest standard of care for people navigating surgery, healing, and body changes.

I will be returning to further my education with Lymphoedema Training Academy so watch this space as I continue to upskill and educate myself with the latest research into lymphoedema and related conditions.

A little honesty from behind the treatment room door:

I’m human.
I feel deeply.
I care fiercely.
I get tired, emotional, overwhelmed — and I still show up with my whole heart.

Thanks for being part of this journey with me.

Confession: my feet are currently auditioning for the role of ā€œswollen summer ankles.ā€
They’re hot, sore, and my sandals have left their mark.
If you’re nodding along, Manual Lymphatic Drainage might be your new favourite summer ritual.

Gentle, rhythmic, and surprisingly soothing — it helps your body shift that extra fluid so you can feel lighter and more comfortable again.
