Knee pain since the half? 🦵

Pain around or behind the kneecap after a race is often patellofemoral pain, sometimes called runner’s knee.

It’s the most common running injury we see in the research, and it usually comes from the knee taking on more than it was ready for, like a big jump in mileage before race day.

The good news is it normally responds really well to the right plan. Strengthening your hips and quads, keeping active rather than resting completely, and some short-term help like taping can make a big difference.

If it’s stopping you running, hasn’t settled after easing off, or your knee is swelling, locking or giving way, drop us a DM to get booked in šŸ“„

This is something I hear all the time in clinic — and it’s one of the most common beliefs out there: if you don’t stretch, you’ll get injured.

However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
A huge study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine looked at over 26,000 participants and found that stretching only decreases the risk of injury by 3.7%. So essentially… nothing šŸ˜‚

What they DID find is that strength and resistance training can decrease your risk of injury by 68%. Quite the difference.

So does this mean you shouldn’t stretch? No.
Working in sport and private physiotherapy, people value how they feel — and in my experience, most people feel better having done it. If stretching is part of your routine and you enjoy it, keep going. Just don’t rely on it as your main form of injury prevention.

Pain I won’t run through as a physio 🚫

Shin splints.

Every runner’s had that dull ache along the inside of their shin. Most people just crack on with it. I’ve done it myself.

But the problem is shin splints sits on a spectrum. It can be medial tibial stress syndrome, or it can be heading towards a stress fracture which are the most common causes of shin pain.

Running through it doesn’t toughen anything up. You’re loading bone that’s already struggling to adapt to the current level of stress. Imagine if you had a bruise and decided to continue to push on it you would expect it to be more sore then after

Here’s what I would recommend:

Reduce the distance or how often your running through the week

Some form of cross training to keep fitness up

Strengthen calves and generally the lower body as a whole

Grade the return back to running once symptoms settle

You don’t need to stop training. You just need to be smarter about it.

Shin splints — or is it something else?

ā€œShin splintsā€ gets thrown around a lot, but it’s actually an umbrella term. Most commonly, it’s known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS)

But not all shin pain is MTSS. It can look a lot like a bone stress injury, compartment syndrome, or even referred pain — and the management for each is very different

If your struggling with shin pain and struggling to get back to sport or running drop is a message šŸ“„
