💊 Today is World Pharmacists Day!

Pharmacists are an important part of Scotland’s unscheduled care network. At NHS 24, our Pharmacy Advisors bring specialist medicines expertise to our clinical teams, while their community pharmacist colleagues provide accessible advice and support to people in communities across the country.

Martin Burnside, Regional Pharmacy Advisor at NHS 24, explains:

“People are often surprised to learn that pharmacists work within NHS 24, but our role is essential to provide specialist medicines expertise and ensure our patients receive safe and effective advice about their medicines.

“Medicines are one of the most common aspects of healthcare that people interact with, so it’s important that patients and our clinical colleagues have access to expert advice when questions arise. Being able to provide that support is one of the most rewarding parts of the role.”

Through NHS Pharmacy First Scotland, community pharmacists can also provide advice and, where appropriate, treatment for a range of common clinical conditions.

“Community pharmacy teams are a vital part of Scotland’s healthcare system and are often the first place people will go for advice.

“Services such as NHS Pharmacy First Scotland are a great example of how community pharmacies are helping people to get the care they need without necessarily having to wait for an appointment elsewhere.”

And Martin has a simple message to help everyone make the most of pharmacy services: plan ahead with your medicines.

🧳 If you’re going away from home, even for just one or two nights, make sure you take your prescribed medicines with you.

🎄 Sorry to mention it, but Christmas is sneaking up quickly! Set a reminder now for December to check that you, and anyone you care for, have enough medication over the festive period. Order what you need in plenty of time and remember to collect it, as GP practices and pharmacies may have amended opening hours over the holidays.
