I get asked that question so often!

There's a widely-held belief that you should not wash your hair before having it colored. But contrary to that myth, it is a good idea 𝐓𝐎 𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐇 your hair the morning of your colour appointment, particularly if you have grays. The exception is when getting highlights, since the natural oils on the hair protect it from the drying effects of bleach. Because gray hair is already resistant to colour, an additional layer of buildup from your natural oils, styling products, and pollution further inhibits absorption. If the hair is clean, you will achieve better coverage.
Try using a clarifying shampoo the morning of your salon visit to more effectively remove residue.

So what to do when getting both base colour and highlights on the same appointment? Wash your hair as getting the base colour right and effectively covering gray is most important.
