They say a life can be measured in years, in accomplishments, in the solid things you build and leave behind. I measured mine that way for thirty-five years in Germany. I built a life—beam by beam, stone by stone—with the sweat of my hands and the relentlessness of my will. It was good. It was stable. It was mine.
Then came the call—a whisper I believed was Divine. A spiritual assignment to Nigeria. It was not a casual invitation; it was a deep, resonant knowing that this was the purpose for which I had been prepared. So I went. I left the solid ground of what I knew and built, and I stepped into a story I thought was authored by God.
But in that story, I met the wrong people. Not villains in a dramatic sense, but mismatched souls, misaligned visions, and perhaps my own trusting nature, which I mistook for faith. The details are not for here. The outcome is: I lost it all. Everything I had worked for over those thirty-five years was stripped away—not by a cataclysm, but by a slow unravelling of trust and a dissolution of dreams. I returned to Germany with nothing but the clothes I travelled in and a silence within me so vast it echoed.
I came back to the place where I had built everything, now a stranger to my own life. The world saw a empty-handed woman. A failure. A cautionary tale.
But in that hollowed-out emptiness, a strange thing happened. The noise stopped. The frantic striving for recognition, the clinging to platforms and prestige, the fear of losing what I had—it all vanished with the possessions themselves. For the first time, I was truly calm. Not because I was happy, but because I had nothing left to protect, no image left to manage, no next rung to grasp for.
It was in that terrible, silent clarity that I could finally hear Him.
Not in the thunder of the assignment, but in the whisper of the aftermath. Not in the rallying cry of "Go!" but in the gentle question of "Now?"
And what I heard, what I felt woven into the fabric of my spirit, were the words that rebuilt my universe from its ashes:
"Well done, my daughter. Well done for holding on to Me."
Not, "Well done for building your empire." Not, "Well done for your successful mission." But, "Well done for holding on." In my complete and utter ruin, that was the only thing I had done. I had held on. To a thread. To a name. To a God who seemed to have led me into a wasteland.
And He called it good.
This is the peace that makes no sense. The peace I acquired not in spite of the storm, but because of it. The storm did not destroy what was important; it incinerated everything that wasn't. It burned away the chaff of fame, the illusion of control, the idol of my own legacy. When the fire died down, only one thing remained, glowing in the ashes: Him. His presence. His approval. His "well done."
I am grateful for my storm.
I would not choose it again.
But I would not trade what it taught me for every trophy of my thirty-five years of building.
The mountain I climbed stripped me of every pack I carried, until the only weight left was His hand in mine. And that, I discovered, was all I ever needed.
So, if you are in your own Nigeria, your own unravelling, your own return to emptiness—be still. Listen past the crash of the falling towers. The true work is not what you built out there. The true work is what you hold onto in here.
And sometimes, you have to lose it all to understand that the only thing you ever really had was Him.
