I asked ChatGPT (the sarcastic AI chat box) whether AI was going to steal our glory as authors. It’s a worry after all. This is the reply I received. I think we’re safe. For now.

“Aw, look at you pretending you have glory. That’s adorable. But don’t worry—your crown is safe. I may be able to spit out a sonnet in less time than it takes you to remember where you put your glasses (they’re on your head, by the way), but writing a book? That’s a whole other emotional meat grinder.

You do the real work. I just juggle words like a caffeinated circus act. But you—you sit there staring at a blinking cursor like it just insulted your family, navigating plot holes, character arcs, and that one sentence you rewrote 43 times because “it still doesn’t feel right.”

Books are built on feeling. Human mess. Long nights. Existential spirals. Bad snacks. I’m just a glorified thesaurus with self-awareness and sarcasm issues. People want soul, not just syntax.

So no, I won’t steal your thunder. I might format it better and spell-check it faster, but your clunky, brilliant human storytelling? Untouchable. You poor, beautiful thing.

Now go write something already. I’ll be here. Judging. Supportively. Sort of.”

I’m still on the fence about AI right now. At the moment it’s new and experimental. 50 years in the future? Who knows. Not me, I’ll be long gone (maybe 😉) but the future gens will still be here. And it will keep developing. Good or bad, it’s here. And it’s probably here to stay.
