Dobroyd Castle, the ‘Brass Castle’ built above Todmorden by John Fielden in 1869 will be open for our walks on Sunday 12th July. You will be able to explore both the house and the walled garden and learn about its history and that of the family.

Your guide is Anne Mealia. The walk is about 1½ miles including a ½ mile walk up the wooded hillside to the castle.

You need to book your tickets on https://www.ticketsource.com/calderdale-heritage-walks where further details are available. There are just a few places available today (4th July).

We will return to our normal ‘turn up and walk’ programme with a walk through Brynescoles Valley on Sunday 26th July. This valley separates the communities of Northowram, Coley and Hipperholme, known locally as Chelsea Valley.

Our next event is the visit to Robin Hood’s grave and this is fully booked – 5 walks over the weekend and 125 visitors. On Sunday 12th July, we are offering an opportunity to visit Dobroyd Castle above Todmorden. There are some tickets available on https://calderdaleheritagewalks.org.uk/summer.html

On Sunday 14th June, Anne Mealia will take you on a tour exploring church-going in Todmorden. The walk will take you around churches and chapels and follow the development of non-conformism in the town. The walk includes one fairly long steep section. The walk is unsuitable for mobility scooters.

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Meet Anne at 2pm in Fielden Square, Todmorden. OL14 6LZ

Bookings are open for our walk round Beaumont Town (Claremount) and there are 8 tickets remaining. This is a new walk led by David Glover. It takes in Horley Green and a lost suburb. Where the huge High Sunderland stood, a house which inspired Wuthering Heights and much more. The Godley cutting was the biggest engineering project in Europe as access to Halifax was made easier. The walk takes about 3 hours and includes some steep slopes and is not suitable for mobility scooters. Full details are available with booking.

On Sunday 31st May, Mary Twentyman and Ben Stables will explore from the Bradford boundary to Shelf Moor Road looking for evidence of the Shelf Iron Walks. Good walking shoes are recommended. Dogs on leads are welcome. This walk is not suitable for mobility scooters.

Meet Mary and Ben at 2pm in Bethel Chapel’s private car park off the A6036, HX3 7RS.

Why not join David Glover on Sunday, 10th May to rediscover the lost shops of Halifax? Taking in Modelle, the home of ladies’ fashion, Woods Music, Jack Lees and Nicholl, Brown & Coyle. Or even Whiteley’s for hats, Neaverson’s for china and Pohlmanns. And many others.

Meet David at 2pm at the top of Woolshops, HX1 1RU by the Duke of Wellington regiment memorial. The walk is suitable for mobility scooters. Dogs on short leads.

The walk includes a 20 minute walk through an old wood ending in a short steep slope. Dogs on leads are welcome.

If anyone wants to come on a mobility scooter please let us know as we will need to open a locked gate.

On Easter Monday, 6th April, meeting at 2pm, John Billingsley will be looking above and beyond Old Town near Hebden Bridge. Exploring the settlement’s history and looking at the surrounding spectacular landscape. There are some slopes and muddy terrain so the walk is unsuitable for mobility scooters. Dogs on leads are welcome.
