Why I have decided to do things differently for my daughter 👇

🚽Potty training is a great time to lay the foundations
My daughters have always known they wipe their vulvas. No code names, pet names or any other form of embarrassment and shame being taught to them by me. When you teach a little girl to use the right words for her body parts you are laying the building blocks that period and puberty education layers onto.

🚫 Banning ‘I’ll tell you when you’re older’
It is our job as parents to answer our kids questions, and shutting them down because they make us feel uncomfortable is only passing on shame and embarrassment to the next generation. There are no off limit questions in our house, just conversations had at the right level for her age and stage.

🛁 Period products on display not hidden away
Period products sit out in our bathroom like any other toiletry, because that is exactly what they are. Hiding them away gives them a power they do not deserve and teaches girls that periods are something to be concealed rather than prepared for.

👨‍👩‍👧 Sons, dads and all men in the conversation
Half of the population lives alongside periods and most of them were never taught a thing about them. When the men and boys in our lives understand periods they can better support us, and that is exactly what I want my daughters to grow up expecting from any future men in their lives. Period education is not just for girls.

🗓 We have spoken openly about periods from the start
Girls can start puberty from as young as eight, which means waiting until it feels relevant is often too late. Talking about periods as a normal, healthy part of life from early on means she grows up without fear or embarrassment, and nothing comes as a shock when it actually happens.
