We’ve all experienced that heat spike on our nails under the lamp, by why does it actually happen?

When a gel nail product cures under a UV/LED lamp, the heat you feel is mainly caused by an exothermic polymerization reaction, a chemical reaction that releases energy as heat.

As the molecules snap together, they release a little bit of energy. That energy comes out as heat, which is why your nails can suddenly feel warm or even hot for a few seconds.

The thicker the layer of gel, the more molecules are joining together at once, so the stronger the heat sensation can be. This is why builder gels often create a bigger “heat spike” than regular gel polish.

Your hormones, pregnancy and condition of your nails could also be a contributing factor to how hot you feel the spike.

Don’t worry. This is a normal reaction. Simply take your hands out of the lamp for a few seconds and place back in.
