Hair Loss/Thinning In Women
Causes and Remedies

This is a bit later than I planned as have been back to Ess*x to visit family. So being inspired by a question about thinning hair and the use of hair extensions which can cause more thinning when they are removed. What do I suggest?
Thinning hair and hair loss can be very stressful for anyone so to the best place to start is the possible causes. We all have had to pull a load of hair out the plug hole or drag a coat of hair out of our brush at some point or everyday but generally it's normal to lose up to a hundred strands a month. If you start losing more than what you consider normal that's when there could be an underlying problem. At this point, please don't panic as there are many reasons why this is happening. It is very tempting to go and find an instant solution for example hair extensions, of course there are many methods of application and this is understandable, if your hair looking good it gives us girls a great confidence boost. Finding the cause or reason for your hair loss is probably the first step and, in some cases, it can be difficult to diagnose, the key is process of elimination. This means building clearer picture of individuals lifestyle, medication, family history, any trauma suffered and illness. Once all this is established then you can go forward to finding the best solution. Although I have been a hairdresser for many years it’s been sometime since college and there has been a lot more research since then. I found a lot of information from online resources such as leading trichcologists who specialise in hair thinning/loss.

Genetic (Androgenetic alopecia)
Usually affecting the frontal area extending back to the crown. The hair follicles became smaller and thinner over time which produces finer hair and until it stops altogether which is when you will see your hair thinning. This is caused by an enzyme that converts the male s*x hormone testosterone to another hormone.

Telogen effluvium
There are many other causes for over excessive hair loss that can be triggered by number of reasons like internal imbalances that put the
Polycystic Ovarian Cysts can be a cause of hair loss due the level in hormones if there are more male hormones(Androgen) to female hormones (Oestrogen) this can impact the hair growth cycle.
Stress
Stress can also raise the androgen levels resulting in hair loss. Although the hair loss might not occur straight away. It could be six or more weeks before you notice excessive hair loss.
Iron deficiency
One of the most common cause of hair loss, iron is important for producing hair cell protein. If this is the problem your tresses will suffer.
Thyroid
Whether you have an overactive or underactive, the thyroid gland is responsible for production of protein and tissue use if left untreated can lead to anaemia.
Skin conditions
Any scalp conditions which can caused by diet, which in turn will affect the digestive system which will eventually effect the hair
Dramatic Weight loss
Crash dieting or sudden unintentional loss of weight is also a factor in hair loss. Our crowning glories are vitally important to us psychologically, for our physiology we can live without.
Age
The menopause can cause hair loss leading up to or as you reach the end. With the aging process the hair does thin naturally and this is a normal process.
Pregnancy and Cancer treatment are temporary and eventually the hair will grow back.

Prevention and remedies
If you are losing excessive amount of hair for 3 months then a visit to the GP or a Trichologist would be advisable, in the meantime here are some solutions to try yourself are
Diet
Introduce protein into your food as this will have a great impact on your hair. Also snacking on healthy carbohydrates.
Adding a supplement to a healthy balance diet for full benefit.
Styling
Try not to put your hair up in messy buns or tight ponytails as this will put tension on your hair.
Fitting hair extensions whatever the method as a lot of hair extensions are in for three months or more causing strain on thinning hair, on removal there would be more likely hood of hair loss.
The only type of extension I would recommend is Flip In Hair, but again it depends on the how visible the wire is on the scalp. It is a handmade weft of human hair on an invisible wire like a fishing wire although not quite. it’s disguised by your own hair on top. I ‘ll include a link to show you.
In my research I found a guy called Mark Glen he does a hair extension system that looks amazing again have included link for you to see. It appears he uses a mech that pulls through your own hair then adds the extensions to it, the colour is matched on the day of fitting. You can have cut to the style you want. It’s very interesting, although I have no idea of cost, or if there any downsides to this idea. It’s worth the look for sure.
Shampooing
Look for hair regrowth shampoos, conditioners and thickening styling products. Keep your hair fresh and clean as a build-up of products can weigh your hair down.
Once you have found a product that suits your hair, when conditioning only apply to the mid lengths and ends. Include a three-minute massage enable to blood circulation to the scalps will help promote hair growth. Adding essential oils to your conditioner like lavender and rosemary to name just two these have soothing and balancing properties, they also will enhance the massage.
Very gently towel dry or even better use an old t-shirt to wrap hair in, being made of cotton its more absorbent and creates less friction to your hair as conventional towels do. Start combing or use a tangle tweezer starting at the ends and working your way up. Go easy on the drying process by using a cooler heat.

Minoxidil
This is an over the counter liquid or mouse medication that helps with hair loss only works for as long as it is used. There are possible side effects and it depends on the individual, there seems to be mixed reviews to whether it works. Consulting a pharmacist or GP first to see if this would be the right course of action would be recommended.
Once the imbalance has been found and addressed you should see an improvement in your hair, but it does take from about six weeks onward, so patience is a virtue here. Till next time ladies

Beating the tangles on Thick Wavy/curly Over Processed Hair

Hello ladies
Here’s my tip and hint post number two. A request by a lady who has thick wavy hair which has been over processed, she constantly has to brush her hair to beat the tangles.

Curly or wavy hair can lose moisture very quickly and can look dry so with added colouring or bleaching it can become very frizzy and hard to manage. Having a starting point is a personal choice depending the time, lifestyle and the look you want to achieve. Begin with a weekly treatment, there are lots out on the market whether professional or from your local high street it could be fun trying to find out which one is right for you and please do share. There are many salon treatments that are good it depends on the range the salon uses, I stock mainly Affinage, they have a product called Vitaplex which comes in a 3-part system. This can be used as a standalone treatment, or by using all parts. 01 Bond Protector during colour/bleaching process which helps protect the inner and outer layers of hair., 02 Bond Reconstructor as the backwash treatment or after colour/bleach treatment hair feels so much healthier afterwards, 03 Bond Preserver is as a take away treatment for clients to use in between visits to the salon. Along with treatment a good cut …. no you say I have taken ages to grow it this length, it’s ok don’t panic less is more as they say and maybe just a smidgen to just get rid of the split ends. You can always go back 6 to 8 weeks later and have a tad more till your hair starts to look healthier. Staying away from the straighteners as much as you can or at least use heat protection to give your tresses a break. Achieving healthy hair after damage is not an instant fix it takes time and commitment.

Washing your tresses at home
Just a thought maybe it's time to embrace the wave or the curl and take on a new look for the summer.
So, starting at home and washing your wavy curly hair. Ditch the shampoo, or at least keep away from products that contain silicone and sulfates theses don’t work well with curly/ wavy hair.
Rinse hair under shower (if you feel you can’t do without shampoo, apply only at roots) rinse out the shampoo quickly as you don’t want the sulfates touching your ends as this will dry out the hair even more. Use plenty of cleansing conditioner, massage into hair gently and leave for five- ten minutes you can use regular conditioner on ends of course experimenting is the best way to find out what works for your hair. For best results decide on the kind of wave/curl you have, you wouldn’t use a heavy conditioner on fine hair with a loose curl so maybe choose chamomile or lavender conditioners, for more medium curls and texture use raspberry apricot fruit and for tight curls you could try coconut or Shea butter conditioners. There are products out there that are designed especially for this like Devacurl No Poo Original Cleanser 3. I haven't used this myself, there is also a wealth of tips about products from professional to high street on the page Curly Girls Uk. I have been told by a friend she uses Garnier Ultimate Blends conditioner for coloured hair is good and her curls are lovely.

Once the conditioner has soaked in comb through in shower if curly with a wide toothed comb. For less curly hair try a Tangle Teezer these are brilliant for getting rid of tangles, again it all depends on your hair texture, so your routine may vary. After thoroughly rinsing try to be gentler with your hair on the towel drying. Squeeze gently and dab your tresses until you have stopped dripping. Leaving it to nearly dry in the towel will create more frizz and dry looking hair. Microfibre towels have tiny fibre particles which are far gentler on the hair cuticle than normal towels. (a t shirt would be just as good).
A leave in conditioner is a must, again there is multiple products out there, I personally use one from OSMOS Wonder 10 but I’m a creature of habit and tend to stick to what I know, try looking for one that specifically for curly/wavy hair.
Leaving wavy/curly hair to dry naturally is probably the best option, apply your leave in conditioner and gently scrunch your hair into the natural waves with your hands, then leave alone. Alternatively use a diffuser with hairdryer on a cool heat. Refreshing your hair in between washes spray damp with water, use a leave in conditioner so you can rake your hands gently through hair. Then apply some curl styling creme to help define your curls again the product is down to the individual. It's also recommended sleeping on a silk pillowcase to help stop the curls becoming tangled and frizzy. If there is anything I’ve missed let me know would love your feedback. Next: Thinning hair

The photos below are of over processed hair, Vitaplex a product I use and lady with regularly bleached hair with toner, Vitaplex used through out the process on naturally wavy hair.

The lovely Chrissie Mills came for her full head blonde highlights. Added some a few copper rose tones from the Metalics Range in Affinage just to give a very delicate tone to middle lengths and ends. Left the top layer blonde.
