Anita was born in a little place on the South Coast called Littlehampton, where The Body Shop are still based to this day. Just along the coast from me in Portsmouth & she died in King Richards Hospital in Chichester.
ππππππππππ
Anitas Body Shop vision started in Brighton, in 1976. She had bought a little Shop, that was a bit run down & mouldy. The only colour that could cover the mould was green & it's been our colour ever since. The reason she painted the shop green was because that was the only colour that hid the mould. The reason she started her business was to support herself & her Daughters as her Husband was going off to realise a long standing ambition.....to ride a horse from Buenos Aires to New York.
ππππππππππ
Everything was done on a shoestring budget with no concession to aesthetics. She offered discounted refills to customers who brought back their empty containers, and used minimal packaging to keep costs as low as possible. Customers were allowed to choose from an array of perfume oils to scent their purchases (which were fragrance-free) because it was cheaper than adding expensive perfumes to every bottle of shampoo or lotion. And she eschewed advertising, relying instead on well-placed interviews promoting her social causes and in-store pamphlets to sell products. Anita had just 25 products on her Shop.....now look at how many we have!

NOT YOUR AVERAGE COSMETICS COMPANY
ππππππππππ
When The Body Shop first opened its doors in 1976, it was a little green-painted shop in the streets of Brighton, England. Its approach to beauty was radically different to the big players in the beauty industry. Anita would make the products at her kitchen table and to entice Customers in she would drizzle products on the pavements outside the shop. It was simple β ethically sourced and naturally-based ingredients from around the world, in no-nonsense packaging you could easily refill. Products and beauty rituals made for every body, that made women feel good in their skin β never promising to make them look like someone else.

PIONEERING SOCIAL CHANGE
ππππππππππ
Over 40 years ago, this kind of approach was ahead of the curve. With Anitaβs passion for the planet and campaigning for causes, The Body Shop was always more than just a beauty brand. It had purpose β profit and principles working in harmony. Our products were never tested on animals and didnβt exploit anyone in making them. We worked fairly with farmers and suppliers, and helped communities thrive through our Community Fair Trade programme. Today, there are more and more brands following in our footsteps, and weβre glad to welcome them aboard. The world needs it.

REDEFINING BEAUTY
ππππππππππ
When The Body Shop first started, the beauty industry had pretty set ideas on what girls and women should look like. But Anita had her own ideas, too. She believed that beauty was a personβs source of joy, comfort and self-esteem. It was what you liked about yourself, and what made you feel good. Her beauty products, she believed, were more about a daily ritual of self-love instead of the false promising of slimming and anti-ageing that the industry pedalled. She didnβt want to create products to make women look a certain way β but to help them be the best versions of themselves.
βI think all business practices would improve immeasurably if they were guided by βfeminineβ principles.β Dame Anita Roddick - FOUNDER OF THE BODY SHOP.

BUSINESS AS A FORCE FOR GOOD
ππππππππππ
The Body Shop is rooted in activism, and our history of campaigning started in 1986. Anita teamed up with Greenpeace on the Save the Whale campaign to fight the cruel practise of whaling, promoting jojoba oil as a substitute for s***m whale oil, which was used widely in cosmetics at the time. We started big. We started as we meant to go on. Today, weβre a trusted global brand with decades of successful activism behind us, and weβre in a unique position to voice millions of customersβ concerns and take our causes to decision makers around the world, to secure long-term positive change.

OUR MOST FAMOUS CAMPAIGN HAS TO BE FOREVER AGAINST ANIMAL TESTING
WE WANT TO BAN THE CRUEL PRACTICE OF ANIMAL TESTING IN COSMETICS. FOREVER.
Weβve been fighting for the rights of animals since 1989. Approximately 80% of countries currently have no laws around animal testing, and together with our friends at Cruelty Free International, our Forever Against Animal Testing campaign is working towards a worldwide ban on animal tested cosmeticsβ¦ forever.

EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS
ππππππππππ
Anita was an activist at heart. Itβs what gave The Body Shop our unique purpose and drive for social change. A true feminist and human rights activist, she built the brand on empowering women and girls with every product and every business decision, striving for equality and creating opportunities for women through our Community Fair Trade programme. Principles some labelled as βfeminineβ β inclusivity, collaboration and compassion β are the foundation of our brand.

VEGETARIAN & VEGAN FRIENDLY
ππππππππππ
At The Body Shop, weβve been fighting animal testing since day one. We champion cruelty-free ingredients and weβre passionate about creating vegetarian products that have never, and will never be tested on animals. We want to cause minimal harm to the planet when we make our products. These days, around half our products are also vegan, and weβre beginning to phase out some animal-derived ingredients in our products. Discover exactly what we mean by vegetarian and vegan products here. By next year, 2023, we will be a vegan brand.

For 40 years, The Body Shop has believed passionately that animals should not be used for cosmetic testing. We have never tested any of our ingredients or products on animals and we never will, and we only source ingredients from suppliers who meet our cruelty free standard. The Body Shop was instrumental in securing UK and European bans on animal testing for cosmetic purposes.
We were the first company to be certified with the Leaping Bunny logo by Cruelty Free International. Leaping Bunny certification is the only internationally-recognised scheme that enables consumers to easily identify and purchase cosmetic and toiletry products that have not been tested on animals.
