Leaving teaching 🤍

I’ve had a few people ask me recently, “Why did you leave teaching?” and I think it’s important to say that I didn’t leave because I stopped loving it.

I loved teaching. I loved the relationships you build with students, those moments when something finally clicks, watching their confidence grow and, most importantly, knowing you’re making a difference. I’ll always be incredibly proud that I became a teacher. 🤍

But sometimes, your priorities change.

For me, my children have always been my priority, and I reached a point where I wanted to be more present for them.

I wanted to be able to go to school assemblies, sports days and Christmas plays. I wanted to pick them up when they were poorly without that horrible feeling that I was letting a classroom of children down.

And honestly, I wanted to be able to have a day off when I’m ill.
A “day off” as a teacher, doesn’t always feel like a day off when you’re worrying about lessons, setting cover work or catching up because you’ve been unwell.

Now, being just over halfway through this pregnancy, I’m especially grateful I made this decision.

I’ve had a lot of cramping recently (side note: everything is okay!), and although I’m so grateful to be growing another little boy, sometimes I simply need to stop, rest and put my feet up.

For the first time, I can.

Without feeling like I’m letting anyone down.

I can listen to my body, be there for my children and slowly build something that works for me, for my family and for my health.

OPAL X was never about running away from teaching.

It was about creating a life that fits the things that matter most to me. 🤍

I’m incredibly proud of my teaching journey and everything it taught me. But I’m also proud of myself for recognising that it was okay to want something different.

Sometimes leaving something you love doesn’t mean you failed.

Sometimes, it means you’re choosing a different kind of life. 🤍

And right now, I feel so grateful that I get to build mine. ✨
