Some of our clients have told us they’d rather go to the dentist than sit in a salon chair.
I’m not offended. I get it.
Maybe you’ve had a stylist talk over you, not listen, or leave you with something you didn’t ask for. Maybe it’s just the thought of small talk with a stranger for two hours. Maybe home box dye has been easier than risking it.

Anyone else find the week before a holiday busier than any actual working week?
We’re off soon. Which apparently means everything needs doing at once.
Squeezing in extra clients before we go. Washing that’s somehow multiplied overnight. The house needs to look like it’s actually lived in by tidy people, for about five minutes.
Max needs sorting. Louis needs ferrying to football and after school clubs, except now they all need longer hours because everyone’s suddenly disappearing somewhere.
Russell’s away working a fair bit of the time, so most of that lands on me anyway. Every hat, worn at once. Just normal round here.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, still get in the chair every day and give people my full attention because that doesn’t stop just because my head’s already half on a beach.
The calm will come. It always does. Just not yet.

Perms aren’t just for the ladies.
Though let’s be honest most of our perm clients are women wanting soft waves, defined curl, body that doesn’t drop out by lunchtime. Texture without the daily styling faff.
But it’s not just the ladies.
Right now the lads are in on it too. Short back and sides, curls piled on top. That exact look you’ve been seeing everywhere.
Straight hair, wanting texture on top? The perm’s doing the heavy lifting either way. Not product. Not twenty minutes of styling every morning.
Wake up. Run your hands through it. Done.

Her words. Not mine.
She sat down excited but new to the salon so not knowing each other can always make clients a little nervous.
We talked it through first. No pressure, no upsell just what would actually suit her and her hair.
A few hours later she’s staring in the mirror going “I should have done this years ago.”

Less than a week of the summer holidays left.
I won’t lie, there’s a bit of relief in that.
Juggling Louis’s care around a salon full of clients Tuesday to Saturday isn’t simple. Especially with Russell away working, which is more often than people realise. Someone has to hold it all together. This summer, more often than not, that’s been me.
School run energy at one end. Colour appointments at the other. And somewhere in the middle, actually being present for him too, not just in the room.
But if I’m honest, I’ll miss it.
The mornings that weren’t rushed. Days that didn’t run entirely on a clock.
Sundays stay sacred here, whatever the season. No plans, just us.
Summer just gives you more of those days. Not only the one.
Back to school next week. Back to routine, structure, five proper days behind the chair without wondering what he’s up to.
I’ll take it. I always do.
But I’ll miss this bit too.
Both things can be true.
